We hiked to Refugio Frey from the carpark of the Catedral ski village. The first part of the hike offers views of Lago Gutierrez and is relatively flat. The next part of the hike is quite steep in places and winds through a beautiful forest. Closer to the refugio, you will begin to see some really beautiful jagged mountain peaks... More

So I thought I'd write this review firstly on the experience I had at and around Refugio Frey, but also to provide some comparison between Bariloche and the other Argentinian and Chilean hotspots of El Chalten and Torres Del Paine. Firstly Frey and the surrounding Lagunas, which are spectacular. The trail up from Catedral base and ski resort is pretty... More

We camped one night and although the hike up isn't too scenic, the view at the top was nice. As we were camping we were only allowed 'sit' in the refugio (had to cook outside in the weather) however for whatever reason we weren't allowed in there in the morning. Bathrooms are good. Select a site on the backside of... More

We stayed at this hut as one night during a three-day trek. The setting is spectacular, right on Lake Frey, surround by incredible rocky spires. The hut itself is an attractive and historical stone structure, however, the overall experience leaves something to be desired. The food is very basic, and the bathroom facilities are unpleasant. The overall area is extremely... More

We took bus 51 from downtown (runs every 15 min after 7:15 am). There are two options to go up the mountain, the normal way and the "por el filo" (along the ridge) route. I had read that the "por el filo" route was an interesting and exciting change from the normal route and we could still take the normal... More

The hike to Refugio Frey, starting at the Cerro Catedral Ski Resort, is a nice day hike (6 to 8 hours in total), ending above the tree line at the Refugio, where one can find nice views (and clean bathrooms). Frist half of hike is basically flat, then it steepens before crossing a rougher stretch right before reaching the Refugio.

The sleeping area in this refugio is very claustrophobic, more than one in our group had trouble climbing to the top row of beds, or rather the top shared platform. Most of us could not get decent sleep due to lack of air. Administration is not very experienced or had a bad day. We were all glad when the morning... More

This is a great refugio and base for trekking the mountain paths above Bariloche. There are two possible treks to get to the refugio. We took the one from Villa Catedral and walked for about 4 easy hours. The facilities are basic, but this is to be expected for a mountain refuse. Staff were friendly and helpful and we took... As others have said, do the hike “por el filo” version if you like a little adventure and have a head for heights and somewhat exposed trails. It’s a different experience, loved it, did it twice. From the base of Cerro Catedral, take the lift up, then another… Then to find the beginning of the walk you may have to... More
