The drive is 110km and you pass through some truly picturesque scenery although, after the initial excitement, it does tend to become a bit samey. Some of the views from the miradors are really gorgeous. There are no towns or facilities along the way so make sure you pack supplies and have a full tank of petrol.

Must-do in the Bariloche area. Stay one night in San Martin de Los Andes and then take a full day driving slowly toward Bariloche. Numerous top-notch points of view, especially in the first-half of the trip.

Weather be with you, we mean good weather. The place is beautiful. Have a good day's rest before you embark on route 40. There are cycling and other road users. Hazardous drive means a constant eye out for danger. Get the other person to take photos while you concentrate on driving.

Ruta de los Siete Lagos - Rout of the Seven Lakes traces a winding path through an epic landscape of sweeping, multi hued forest, towering peaks and serene lakes. Touted as one of the most scenic drives in Argentina.

This road is perhaps the most beautiful drive in the world. We took it from Bariloche to San Martin de los Andes. You pass seven magnificent alpine lakes, beautiful rivers, and those majestic Andes. You have to take this road if in the area. Rent a car, do the route. You can do it easily in one day, with many stops along the way. There are waterfalls, bridges, wildlife, and very few cars. No services, so bring supplies. They have repaired and built up the road, so it is much better than before. Stay in either town depending on which way you go. Beautiful way to see the lakes region.

This was one of the hardest parts of my travel so far, but it was definately worth it. I know most people prefer doing this by car, but if you are up to the challange you will get a whole different experience out of it. My highlights were being able to camp right next to the lakes as well as seeing the beautiful colours around, since we were in autumn.
So, to start off we needed bikes, so we went with the company "Cordillera Bike" in Bariloche (which I have reviewed seperately). The bike company was kind enough to give us maps, as well as offer transport services to send the bikes back and to send our bags to our final destination (which a would recommend as every kilo more carried can be a burden!!).
The trip was broken down into 4 days:
Day 1: Bariloche to Villa Angostura
Instead of biking through Route 40, which is heavy in traffic, we took a boat tour Puerto Pañuelo to visit Isla Victoria and see the Quetrihué National Park. The port is about 7km from the bike rental area and you can get one way tickets with one of the boating companies (they dont charge extra for the bikes). We found this was a great option as it saved us a day of biking on what isnt technically the seven lakes road while allowing to see a very beautiful area. From the Quetrihué National Park, you have to bike through the forrest, which i found quite enjoyable, but can be difficult if you are not accustomed to it. In autumn, be aware that you wont have much time to get to Villa Angostura, since you get dropped off by the boat around 4:30 and the sun sets around 7 - 7:30. So my advice is, to go around the national park quickly, then get going as it will take you about 2-3 hours to get to Angostura.
Day 2: Villa Angostura to Villa Traful
First day of real biking on the road... You will go by Lago Espejo, L. Correntoso and L. Espejo Chico. At some point you will reach a junction where you can continue straight to San Martin, or side track to L. Traful. We chose the side track, which is not paved so it will be quite tough. We stopped at a campsite about 15km before Villa Traful, which was right on the lake (Picture included).
Day 3: Villa Traful to Lago Falkner
Bike back to the main road. Next lakes you will encounter are L. Escondido, L. Villarino and L. Falkner, where we made camp. Some parts of the road are not paved, but are currently under construction.
Day 4: Lago Falkner to San Martin de Los Andes
Todays the longest day, but it ends with 18km of downhill to San Martin (really fun!). THe lakes on the way today are L. Machónico L. Lacar. You can take a detour to see Lago Meliquina, but the roads are not paved.
Some extra notes about the trip:
Trip distance was about 200km, with the detours (about 160km if you stay on the main road). Average biking time was about 4-6 hours per day.
After the semana santa (easter), all facilities along the road close, so you need to bring enough food for the whole journey or buy it from V. Angostura, and bring toilet paper!!
Since all the campsites were closed, we had to climb into them (technically breaking in, but its either that or wild camping)
Be prepared to not take a shower for the whole journey if you are travelling in the off season.

If you are driving from Bariloche to San Martin, the main highway north through Junin is the most direct route, but by far they most beautiful and enjoyable drive is turning off to Villa La Angostura, then taking the Seven Lakes route up to San Martin. The government has been working/upgrading this road for several years and it's close to being finished, so actually driving this way is not much longer now. This is a truly gorgeous drive along the base of the Andes, past rivers, lakes, scenic overlooks, stunning vistas. If you want to treat yourself stop at the Hotel Correntoso for lunch, or pack a picnic and stop along side one of the crystal clear rivers or lakes. Don't forget to take a bottle of wine, and if you are an fly-fisher, there are plenty of places to wet a line.

We hired a Ford Ecosport from Bariloche airport and drove from Bariloche to San Martin de los Andes and back (allowing 5 hours drive each way so that we could take our time and stop off for photos, drinks, picnics etc.).
On the way to San Martin, we didn't actually drive the 7 Lakes Route - we went along Ruta 65 via Villa Traful and then doubled back along Ruta 63 to San Martin - the long way around. The views were amazing - especially from the Mirador just outside Villa Traful - WOW. Stopped off at a few little bays and beaches by the lake too. The first 10km of Ruta 63 were VERY bumpy - you won't go much above 20km/h on that stretch. But the route is spectacular with canyon walls along both sides of the road, awesome rock formations, pretty rivers etc. (a bit different from the lake views of the 7 Lakes Route and worth it for a bit of variety). And following that initial stretch, we drove the most amazing winding road we have ever seen - felt like it was straight out of a Top Gear Best Roads to Drive Special! This scenic route is has much less traffic than the 7 lakes route.
Our drive back from San Martin to Bariloche was along the real 7 Lakes Route (now part of Ruta 40). Amazing views of the lakes - worth stopping briefly at the miradors when you come across them to take a look at each lake.
WARNING! We stopped off at Cascada Nivinco to walk up to the waterfall, which is apparently a nice 2km walk from the 'car park'. You have to drive up a small dirt road, well off the main road, park the car (where you can amongst the trees!) and then walk from there. When we got out of the car, another family approached us and told us that they had left their car unattended whilst walking up to the waterfall and someone had broken in and stolen a handbag containing a lot of cash. Nobody saw the thieves as the car park is so quiet and off the beaten track. We decided not to walk to the falls as we had all of our luggage in our car and we didn't want to risk it getting stolen. Sadly, this is a great location for thieves - it is secluded and there are lots of tourists who leave their cars there to go to the waterfall. So if you go, don't leave valuables unattended in the car!
The driving is not for the faint hearted - the majority of the roads (esp. if you take Ruta 65 and 63 like we did) are unpaved i.e. gravel/dirt roads that create a lot of dust, and there are not always barriers along the roadside. On the 7 Lakes Route itself, there can be lots of traffic, including HGVs and tourist coaches - and overtaking can be pretty hairy with winding roads and lots of dust. But, if you like driving, this is a must-do driving experience. Take a decent car (our Ford Ecosport was not 4WD but did fine) and get good insurance cover - we got a small chip in the windscreen which was covered by our insurance with no excess (and seems to be quite a common occurrence). Tip: officially you should obtain an international driving licence to rent a car in Argentina, but in reality, showing a valid UK driving licence is fine in our experience.

I took the flight from Buenos Aires to Bariloche. Then I rented a car at that airport and took the RN 40 towards Villa la Angostura.
Stayed there for 2 nights and then headed towards San Martin de los Andes.
After 4 nights, took the flight in San Martín to Buenos Aires (returned the rented car at the San Martin airport).
The route from Villa la Angostura to San Martín is beaultiful, even during the Winter. There was snow on the side of the road but it was safe. The park guards take care of it. The view of the lakes is awesome.
Plan your trip (~90 min) to the daytime.
No gas station nor restaurant, so be prepared.
If you rent a car in the Winter it is recommended to ask for chain for tires, in case you want to go to Cerro Chapeldo.

The Lake district is lovely. Beautiful lakes, mountain views, desert microclimates, interesting rock formations. Instead of taking the day tours, I took public buses because I had over a week and wanted to plan my own schedule. Suggest buy tickets to and from a few days in advance or at least a day before to make sure get on. There is an info desk at main bus terminal in Bariloche.
If time, do a day trip to Lake Traful (48 pesos) (8.7p/US$1 official; blue rate offered at 11 to 13p/US$1). Spent about 4 hours walking the lovely trail next to the lake and eating a wonderful trout lunch. Great ice-cream too.
Get off at 1st vs 2nd stop in Villa Traful to buy your ticket to Villa Angostura asap if going on from there as can't buy a ticket to Villa La Angostura from Bariloche and bus to Villa is small.
Can go from Bariloche to Villa La Angustura too. Only 1 hr and 15 min. & about 56pesos (ARS). Best to sit on side facing river or lake. Best to get a window seat as locals might close the curtain blocking your view especially if sun streaming in. Front seat up top is roomy with great view. Front seat by driver might have good view though might have people sitting on front step and driver might have radio on. buses usually have a bathroom or make a stop if long ride and dvd videos. Worthwhile to spend a night in Villa La Angostura to take the boat to Bosque Los Arrayanes. Or take the Boat from Puerto Panuelo in Bariloche. Worthwhile to spend a night in San Martin de Los Andes too and at least two nights (preferably more) in Bariloche area to go up Cerro Capinario and the other cable car mountains and to LLao LLao area.
In February they were completing paving the entire route. I give credit to those who bike the route but it looks too dangerous to me given the amount of traffic during the time I was there. In my opinion, best would be to take a car, a few days, and picnic.
El Bolson was nice for a couple of nights to. Go rafting on Rio Manso and to the Lake. Enjoy

Hola, buenos dias.
