We just had a fantastic day with our delightful guide Abel, hiking up Cerro Colorado, a volcano local to San Martin. Great walk - 5 hrs or so at a gentle pace with stops and a break on the summit. It’s quite a steep path in places, but you don’t need to be an expert - especially if you have Abel with you!
All organised by the super friendly and helpful Dani from the excursion agency based in San Martin, Club de Viajeros. Thank you for a special experience. Highly recommended.

Superb hike with jaw dropping views from the summit. You can see at least three volcanos if it’s a clear day. As others have mentioned, the hike is steep in parts. We did this after 10 days of hiking in the region and it took us less than 2 hours up, and probably 1.5 going down. If we’d done the hike on day one I’m guessing our quadriceps would be screaming. Poles are very helpful. I’m 57 and my husband is 61 so this is suitable for all ages apart from very small children. I suffer from vertigo but had no trouble on this hike. It’s dusty, like many mountain trails in the region. Bring plenty of water and good boots.

Amazing walk, especially on a clear day - view at top incredible.
Easy to park at start 14km outside of San Martin de Los Andes.
5km up and then again down (10km total). Approx half the walk is shaded by trees.
Map and profile at start of walk. See pic.
Km 1 - easy - across a field.
2 fairly steep
3-4 STEEP
Flattens in places later on
At top is small shelter in case of wind. Spectacular views 360

Two of us are fit-ish. Aged 40-50 and took 3.5 hours total with a few breaks.
Absolutely worth doing. Very well marked and prepared trail. Maps.me app also useful as a back up.

We hiked Cerro Colorado with two families. We had kids from 6 to 14 years old. The hiking trail is was appropriate kids older than 11 years old. A nice experience but we were not prepared to have to stop for the smaller kids. It would have been good to know this in advance. The trail for kids should be considered as advanced.

We went on a Monday, hardly anyone else was there, perfect weather, clear skies and no wind. Since we don't have a car we took a taxi from San Martin (800 pesos, great guy too, Rodolfo) and began the trek at 11:30. It's a tough trail, steep uphill the entire way, my lungs were screaming but it was so worth the pain. It took us 2 hours, 45 minutes. You'll know when you get to the top, there's a huge pile of rocks that actually serves as a shelter from the wind but we were lucky, no wind at all on the day we went. The views are incredible in all directions and our cab driver whose hobby is mountaineering and trekking told us about several hikes you could take from the top. We sent him a whatsapp message from the top where there is cell service (no service at the bottom) and asked him to meet us in 2 hours. You probably could hitchhike back but we were tired and wanted to know we would get back to town. Actually our journey down was equally as tough, but this time it was the knees and legs because it's all downhill and much of it is very steep but we made it in 1 hour 45 minutes.
This is a beautiful hike, it's tough going up and going down but the views are incredible. We loved it!
Bring water, a camera, something to eat, something for the wind if needed and most importantly for us, hiking poles.

It's the most widely known and hiked peak in the area; with about 1800m. The trail is well marked, recently got some maintenance (2016-2017 season).

If you are looking for mountains and do not know the area or someone to take you to lesser known peaks (less people and with less clear trails), the start by this one! Stunning views.

Be prepared anyway. The trail is steep, it takes about 2-3h to reach the summit. It can get very hot in summer and there will be no water except at the very beginning.

The view is definitely worth the hike.
Finding the way up is easy. 770 m altitude with a consent relatively steep ascent.
Up top can be very windy, be sure to have proper clothing.
The ascent is not technical at all and can be done by anybody reasonably fit. Especially for the return walking sticks can be helpful.

It's three hours of permanent climbing up, very windy, cold, they built a wall to take shelter and eat something light. The descent is difficult and steep and lasts 1:30 hours. Very beautiful. Then continue to yuco.y inn Hua hum *****
