the mercado artisanal is a few kilometers outside the center, but it may be interesting, to walk across the road of Salta to see, how people are living.
The gifts and the exhibited goods have rather high quality. There was not much; so we had a lot of time, to look for things which are really good souvenirs.

We were looking for some artisan goods such as ponchos, rugs and pottery so went to the artisan market. The selection was ok, a bit strange there were no rugs in the entire market and it is one of the most typical artisan goods from NW Argentina. Prices were significantly higher than in other shops or in the small towns.

It is one of the best places to shop for regional handcrafts and artisanal products made by local artisans and artists. There is a great variety of products including mate, bombillas, frames made of wood and alpaca (metal), also clothing such as scarfs, pashminas, sweaters made of guanaco and alpaca (cloth). You will also find all sorts of souvenirs. As a local, its my gifts shopping spot for international friends when I travel. I definetely reccomend it.

On one side of the street is the true artesanal shops with nice, handmade products. Across the street is a cluster of stands offering Andean style products such as ponchos, hats, musical instruments, etc. Depending on what you are looking for, it could be worth your while.

Well worth the 20pesos taxi fare to get there, you can easily spend the whole morning browsing.
Excellent alpaca scarves, silver jewellery and wooden masks - prices are very modest.
When you finished cross the road to find a small modern shop with knitted owls! loved it

The USD4 taxi ride to the market from the central area is worth it if you're looking to buy larger-ticket items. If you're only looking for cheap trinkets and other souvenirs, head to the souvenir shops in the town center instead. There were only 4 to 5 shops in the market and most of the nicer items on offer were pricey.
Don't bother with the souvenir shops across the street from the artesenal market because items sold here are similar to those sold in the town center and the smaller towns of Purmamarca and Huamahuaca (if you're headed there, shop for souvenirs in these towns as prices are something like 40% cheaper).

Suerte!
