Our trip over the Andes from Santiago did not include
bus transportation. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
The border is a mess.
Our private car did it in less than an hour.
The huge line of buses did NOT move an inch
while we crawled along to freedom.

Buses apparently take 3 to 4 hours so make
it through so make sure you are prepared ...
... you have a sleeper chair, reading materiel, snacks and drinks.

This is a great way to get from Santiago to Mendoza. It is very scenic and thrilling to traverse the 29 switchbacks to crest the Andes. It is a 5 to 6 hour ride, longer if there are lines at the border. There are many bus companies that offer this fare and I am so glad we did the bus instead of fly. We chose a double decker bus and seats were very comfy. Make your reservations in advance so you can get on the top deck and seats in the front. Note that in winter months the pass may be closed so check first.

The journey from Chile to Mendoza is slow and for that reason, frustrating, but the stark landscape is really stunning and it's particularly striking during winter when the peaks of the surrounding mountains are crested in snow.

This is the border immigration compound between Chile and the Mendoza province in Argentina. The Chilean and Argentina immigration are integrated. However, it took us four long hours to cross the border to Argentina due to the high volume of vehicles during this long weekend in Chile. The immigration staff were nice but it seems there was a strike by the Customs staff in Argentina.
We must say that the road is great on both sides of the border. This place is at 3200 meters of altitude.

Such a pity that Chile and Argentina are still stuck in the 1920's when it comes to their customs and immigration systems. Takes four people to do the job of one, guess it keeps the unemployment level low!!! Good news is the new border crossing is being constructed with the hope of great improvement.

If you are not in a rush, this is the best way to admire the landscape in the middle of the Andes. Buses travel everyday from Chile to Argentina and there are cheap tickets (20.000 CL$). About the border.... it's another story. It is so long to cross the border and the agents are so... I don't know. Well, they do their job but they're gonna check everything and you will probably feel like you are a soldier in the army who has to follow their orders like a sheep. But as I said, they just do their job and sometimes it takes time. Don't forget to declare anything, even an apple!

taking a bus from Santiago, Chile to Mendoza, Argentina is the best way how to see the beautiful landscape that changes so much throughout and you also get a glance of Aconcagua. Reserve the front row top floor seats a few days in advance to get the most out of it. We left at 8am, it was supposed to land at 330p due to usually super long wait at the border, but we were lucky and there was no wait. We made it to Mendoza by 1pm and had sunny beautiful view the whole time. So well spend cash and the buses are super comfy!

We went at the end of May on a day when the pass was open but had recently been closed due to snow. We waited in line for hours. There seemed to be high traffic, plus a motorcycle accident. The views were beautiful, and maybe in different circumstances it wouldn't be so bad, but definitely worth it to fly.

This is International Paso is the border between Argentina and Chile, located in the Chilean side. We passed by bus and the aduana service was very good and gentle. This place is 3,500 meters high. From that place the road drives you to Santiago, the capital of Chile. This road is amazing because it goes at least 2,500 meters down. Drives must drive very carefully.
