Neighbourhood: Retiro
Exquisite palaces and luxurious apartment buildings combine with art galleries and exclusive boutiques to make Retiro the perfect spot for those who enjoy sophistication. However, the non-stop foot traffic to and from Retiro train and bus terminals, accompanied by the myriad of trucks leaving and arriving at the port, mean this neighbourhood is never truly at rest. One minute you are walking down a street dotted with ornate mansions and luxurious shop windows and the next you find yourself surrounded by a sea of people racing to catch their train or bus. It is this juxtaposition of never-ending comings and goings and quiet, elegant luxury that defines Retiro, as well as Buenos Aires, a city where sharp contrasts are all around.
How to get there

This Palace was designed by French architect Paul Pater in 1912 for Daniel Ortiz Basualdo, the style is a subtle blend of Louis XV architectural influences, Asian decorations and English-style exterior designs.
In 1925 it served as the official residence for Great Britain's Prince of Wales on his visit to Argentina.
In 1939 has it was purchased by the French Embassy for their official building in Buenos Aires.
But in 1970 part of the building was threatened with demolition, for the constructing of the 9 de Julio, but thanks to the French government’s refusal to sell the property, the course of the road was slightly altered to allow it to be saved, and to become one of the most impressive landmarks on the 425 feet wide avenue. Today it is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in Buenos Aires, the interior decoration captures the spirit of the aristocracy of the late19th century, with large woodwork and marble coverings.

Tip: It is possible to enter but once a year and gets really crowded.

I’ve never entered the building for a tour, but you can tell it’s simply majestic. Would like to see it from the inside. Updated review will follow + pics.

This is a gorgeous embassy in an upscale neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. Walking around here is splendid, in the direction of Recoleta. Just be careful on a Sunday or holiday when the streets are quiet as there are gangs that play the game of "squirt" one spraying foul fish oil on you, the other pretending to help you clean it up, while a third picks your pocket, purse, or backpack.

on our way to a restaurant we had the opportunity to pass the French Embassy, a magnificent building that illustrates the greatness we no longer have.
