Neighbourhood: San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.

    Something for Everyone
Unbelievable marketplace ensconced in old area of Buenos Aires. You just don’t know where to look first. Antiques, clothing , rare spices, meats , vegetables and clothing are just a list of items to be found I. Stalls in This historical marketplace. A great stop on our city tour.

    Almost 150 years of history
Wandering around San Telmo district is in itself a pool of discoveries; Defensa Street offers a variety of styles, varied architecture, galleries and expressions of art of all kinds, even better on Sundays. One block away from the street, San Telmo old market is a gem, with genuine kiosks and shops offering typical food (a bit overpriced but still), antique items and souvenirs. Most tourists tend to stick to Defense Street and would miss this market.

Blocks and blocks and blocks of outdoor market, good food in interior market
Such fun! We met friends over in the San Telmo neighborhood and ended up spending hours exploring the weekend market. The neighborhood, one of the oldest in Buenos Aires, is cool, with beautiful streets and interesting architecture. The main indoor market has tons of food options and a few shops. It is EXTREMELY crowded, so bring your patience. But it’s cool to walk through and has a great energy. While some of the vendors are a little junky, some are cool. The streets surrounding the outdoor market spill on for blocks and blocks and blocks with vendors selling all kinds of wares—again, a mix of some junky stuff and some cool stuff. There are a lot of antique vendors selling all kinds of glassware, silver, etc. And there’s a lot of vendors selling fresh-squeezed orange juice, which you should definitely buy (it was delicious). It happened to be beautiful weather, which made it all the more fun. A really great afternoon while in Buenos Aires.

    Often overcrowded on weekends
Although weekends are the busiest, some vendors only open their stalls for weekend shoppers. All types of foods and goods are sold, including some antiquities, the majority of which I consider overpriced. The foods served are generally very good. There are always some interesting items to consider buying.

    Good Market Experience
I just wish we had of found this place earlier in our visit? As it was, we only had time to scratch the surface on what was on offer in the market. Heaps of food sources & bars with all the other market offerings, from meat, vegies, vinyl records to curios! Absolutely packed on our visit and a very popular spot for locals & tourists. Make sure you give yourselves time to enjoy this place. Been going since 1897 and easy to see why!

Came over from our airb&b and enjoyed our first real taste of urban Argentina. Bustling, lively, attractions of all kinds, not just shopping of all kinds but great places to eat and drink.

Coolest place in BA. Good. Chaos. Drinks. Souvenirs. Tons of culture.

This is an underground market in BA that’s full of food stands, kiosks, shops, stores, etc. vibe is super cool. Always crowded. Always. And by crowded, I mean very. Don’t go thinking you’ll own the aisle. You’ll be bending, turning, twisting, and saying “perdón” during your visit.

Photos are cool. Food options are broad and varied, including lots of artisanal beer and Argentina’s famous empanadas. Gifts and gadgets are interesting. Antique options too.

This is place you can stop in for a 20 minutes splash down and photo op… or 4 hours of food, fun, and finding goodies. Heck, you could spend all day here. There plenty of wine and beer to support that.

Good place. Go. Go now.

This was very busy, but very fun! The food was delicious (we had empanadas). We went for the normal shops and then again on a Sunday for the antique market, which was super fun. We walked from the Recoleta area (around an hour) and enjoyed making a day of it.
Was a nice thing to do!

We visited this market while on a tour of BA. It was a holiday so some things weren't open but (on the good side) it wasn't crowded. There are a variety of food vendors, market stalls, and souvenir shops. It was nice to visit.

Fantastic market. Lots of clothes, antiques, crafts, food stalls and fruit and veg. Well worth a visit. It's not as cheap though as other areas.

Cool vendor and food stalls to explore while visiting the San Telmo neighborhood. We ate delicious food and snagged some souvenirs to bring home.
