I love book stores. Before visiting this one, the best bookstore in my opinion was Kinokuniya in Singapore. El Ateneo doesn't have the variety you can find in the largest Kinokuniya's but the building and the gourmet coffee shop make it a very special place. A place that you don't want to leave. It has the magic atmosphere of a... More

El Ateneo is located in the center of the city, on Santa Fee between Callao and Rio Bampa. You get quite surprised when you enter the bookstore. It's in on old beautiful theater. Tree floors surrounded by an beautiful interior and ceiling. At the end of the main floor is a cafe on the scene. Well worth a visit.

Good books and nice to pass by them taking a look, but there isn't much to do there, but to look at the view.

This bookstore in an old theatre is worth the visit even if you don't read Spanish. It is absolutely stunning and it's the first time I have ever taken photos in a bookstore. The only other bookstore I have been to that is as beautiful was in Oporto, Portugal. There is also a good-sized cafe. I spent hours here on... More

Buenos Aires has more Bookstores per person than any other city in the world. El Ateneo Grand Splendid mega bookstore is and old theatre converted in a modern bookshop. You need to visit this place, read a book and drink a coffee.

Even if you don't like reading, this is a must see building just for the architecture. An ex theatre that is a Grand Splendid! There is a coffee shop inside if you need a rest from walking.

This book store is located in an old theater building, it has 3 levels and a nice cafe. Up points are the building and the variety of books in Spanish. Downside is the cafe service that's a little slow and the selection of books in English.

This bookshop has been praised in most of the travel guides and its not without reason. The grandious old theater serves now as cenario for a big bookshop with a smal coffeshop where the stage was, nevertheless the service=shopassistents arent very pleased to help costumers and you can see it ... As a matter of fact wich really schocked us,... More

Staying in Recoleta

Neighbourhood Profile
Recoleta
Characterised by the French-style mansions which are the legacy of its aristocratic past, Recoleta is the true “Paris of the South.” Walking around this neighbourhood is an experience like no other in Buenos Aires: its streets are lined with elegant apartment buildings, exclusive boutiques, and former mansions turned into high-end hotels and embassies, which exude an alluring air of sophistication and class. You'll also find a rich cultural scene centred on the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Library, and the Recoleta Cultural Center; as well as some great shopping spots, like the Buenos Aires Design Mall with an artists' fair set up in Plaza Francia every weekend.
