This avenue runs from Plaza de Mayo, which is in front of Casa Rosada, the equivalent of the White House in Washington,D.C. Within this avenue is Cafe Tortoni, the most famous coffee house in the city, with a history of tango celebrities from yeas ago, to many famous and notable figures.

I'm not sure what makes this eligible for a Certificate of Excellence, especially given its relative low ranking as compared to other BA attractions. It's a nice looking street but it's still a city street lined with those types of shops and offices that one would expect in a large city. Don't make a special trip just to see this... More

The Avenida de Mayo connects the Plaza de Mayo with Congressional Plaza, and extends 1.5 km in a west-east direction before merging into Rivadavia Avenue. My main interest centered on the architectural masterpieces on both sides of the street. The Avenue weas declared a National Historic Site in 1997 and, as a result, the aesthetics of the buildings, billboards, and... More

The 2 sides are quite different. The Congresso side is full of art neauvo edifices. The other side is more commercial and flows into the downtown which is full of surprises.

We were advised not to go out after dark, but a taxi ride took us through this area, which looked really busy and relatively safe. The following evening we took a stroll up the avenue which was really busy with theater goers and travelers. The view of the Obelisk is impressive.

We walked along that street many times and each time we found a new building we had never noticed. The best time was during a demonstration. Argentinians can be so creative along that street that has seen so many actions of solidarity.

Just an other main street in an other large city. Bustling, noisy and perfumed with the exhaust gas from never ending traffic. The sidewalks could use some TLC, the are in dire need of repair- look down while walking.

Walking from Av 9 de Julio to Congresso was no problemo for this couple mid-day. The building architecture is quite nice and the street tree-lined.

Tree lined avenue running to the Cathedral and pink house. Some shops and restaurants but not as many as other close by streets.

Staying in Montserrat

Neighbourhood Profile
Montserrat
As part of the historic quarter of Buenos Aires, Montserrat is defined by the historical events that took place there and the landmarks that have stood the test of time. The Plaza de Mayo is at the center of this connection to history: countless public demonstrations have passed through this square, going back to the May Revolution of 1810. Walking the streets of Montserrat allows us to imagine what Buenos Aires may have looked like in the past: the Cabildo takes us back to the late 16th century, while the Palacio Barolo and the traditional cafés carry us to the early 20th. Nowadays, the neighbourhood is inundated every day by office workers, buses, and taxis; still, the cobblestones, narrow sidewalks, and subway stations from the 1910s remind us that we are surrounded by history everywhere we look.
