Historic monument not to be missed.

It is an historic monument not to be missed. The templars hystory should be better explored and exposed to the visitors. Not only souvenirs at the store.

Huge complex, wonderful decoration and architecture, a massive building. Interesting to see the many cloisters, kitchens, monks cells, dining hall etc. Entered through the old castle with well kept gardens inside. A long walk with many levels and steps - you have to be mobile. First went up there on the Tuktuk from the main square I highly recomend their... More

You can do the tour by yourself with no problem! They have signs in every corner so you don't have to worry about getting lost in the huge castle! Amazing for history buffs! At the right time of the day, the light makes everything golden, a great opportunity for breathtaking picutres!

This is truly a MUST SEE. A place where history, art and legend merge in a most remarkable manner. It remindes us of a time and a conflict we would not want to relive. Still, who knows?

We came to Tomar specifically for this and we were not disappointed. The monastic complex is huge. There are many different architectures in the monastery as kings and princes added to it for hundreds of years. We were told it possess almost every kind of Portuguese architecture.

Tomar is famous for the being the headquarters of the Knight Templar who had enormous power in Europe in the 12th to 16th centuries. A visit to the magnificent Convento de Cristo clearly shows the wealth. You can drive up to the Convento de Cristo with limited parking saving same effort and time to explore the old town below. Do... More

I'm ashamed to say that I had not heard of the convent until we visited Tomar for other reasons but it was stunning. The location is fantastic but what made it so special was the size of it and the fact that every time we thought we had seen the best of it we would go through a door or... More

A fine Convent built 12th C onwards and well restored. Not to be missed. Just some of the best parts are the Charola (octagonal Templar altar), Main Cloister (with intricate stone stairways to roof level) and Manueline Window (apparently one of the most original). Excellent value needing several hours to really explore and be amazed.
