This is located in the historical part of Tomar on the Praca da Republica, plenty of small eating café/bars around the square.
The church was built in the 15th Century, very attractive. We saw views of it whilst at the Castel . We did not venture inside

The church was undergoing some painting job so most of it was covered, but the clocktower is really wonderful. The view of the castle and this church's tower from Rua Serpa Pinto is really fantastic! The square in front of the church is also quite admirable.

Best viewed from the outside with its very distinctive tower. But inside - quite underwhelming. Unlike many Portuguese churches, there are no over the top saints' statues, paintings or ornaments. I swear you'll be heading for the exit in five minutes.

Very curious church from early XVI century, later enlarged and altered, that combines elements from different periods and styles: late gothic, baroque and Manueline. The paintings adorning the walls are also from the XVI century.

If you visit Tomar, and if churches are what you like, this place will deliver it to you. From Gothic age in excellent shape. Inside you'll discover lot of Christian art.

The church was built in „15th century by king Manuel, so it is the manuelian syle. The portic has a flamboyant gothic style, wonderful.
Also, impressive is its position, in the central square of the town, where you can find cafes and restaurants where to have a nice break.

The 'Igreja de São João Baptista' ( Church of St. John the Baptist ) is situated in the centre of the beautiful City of Tomar and is located in the Praça da República ( the republic square )
Built in 1490, it is another example of the equisite 'Manueline' architecture of this era.
The interior is made up of 3 naves with pointed arches and it is worth noting the beautiful Gold and White Altar, the black and white diamond mosaics and the Octagonal Spire. There are several 16th Century paintings displayed including one of 'The Last Supper'.
It was classified in 1910 as a 'Portuguese National Monument' and is also famous for being the centre for the 'Festa Dos Tabuleiros' which takes place in Tomar every 4 years..........the next in 2011. It is open every day from 9.30am -12 and 3.30 - 7pm. Entry is free and it is well worth a visit during your stay in Tomar.

Normally the church is closed except on Sundays, but because restoration work is being performed, it was open. The church has a very pretty alter, but otherwise, it is unremarkable.

The church is relatively plain but it is supported by a tower on its side with a spire on top. Praca da Republica sits in front of the church and the open space enables the church to be visible from Castelo de Tomar.

We were at the Square on a Sunday, very quiet, and businesses were shut down except for the restaurants, but cuisine was good. The part was active with sellers.
