Walking around the castle and on the ramparts is a unique experience that allows for multiple views of the town of Tomar and the church. Worth leaving aside an hour or two for exploring the site!

This is a fortress church built by the Knights Templar. It has a distinctive altar built for worshipers on horseback, as the Knights were wont to do. If you visit the Convento of Tomar, this will be included.

this is a great castle to visit. It was the headquarters of the Knights Templar. The Charola (round church) of the castle of Tomar was built in the second half of the 12th century. The church, like some other Templar churches throughout Europe, was modelled...More

It was worth visiting this place. We are sort of culture bar barracks but this place needs to be seen and we enjoyed it very much.

Visited this charming castle and had a fabulous time. It's truly breathtaking. Excellent self tour, views over the town and the inner church is a huge surprise. The Knights Templar knew how to impress. The age of the building and quality of the remains are...More

The mighty castle was a part of the defense walls, which dated 12th century. During the next centuries, the Templers and their followers had built it up until today's structure. We spent a lot of time queuing for tickets, as there was only one man...More

Learning the history and story behind the castle is a must. The little bit of research done before arriving only minutely prepared us for the feeling we had when we stepped through the door. Each new passage way, set of stairs, or walk along the...More

A place you should visit, expecting to find some important references inside the castle, about history and mainly references from the Temple and Cristo structure.

The Castelo is also called Convento de Cristo or the Convent of Christ. We came here because I have always been fascinated by the Knights Templar so had to see one of their places. Excellent! Must see! The overall grounds really give you a good...More

We were there in the afternoon. They only had one audio guide left (which my wife got). There were people every where setting up sets for a movie(?) or a May 1 celebration. Those detracted from the enjoyment of seeing the castle. Also, there is...More

We are driving from Lisbon to Porto and would like to visit Tomar (and in particular the castle) along the way. Unfortunately, we will have luggage in our rental. Would you feel safe leaving luggage in the car while visiting? Any suggestions?

Visiting the castle there is a small cafe on the left as you approach the top. I would recommend you park close to that and hide everything in the boot. The other person has made a good suggestion too. The town has lots of... More
