Built by Thomas Bain in the 1860's, the Prince Alfred Pass (R339) is a dirt/gravel mountain pass between Knysna/Plettenbergbay and Avontuur/Uniondale. It is a scenic route with spectacular views and interesting flora. Please note that this is not a shortcut from the Langkloof to Knysna/Plettenbergbay. Having been built about 150 years ago, parts of this historic pass is very winding and narrow. In some areas the surface of the road is eroded and there are a few potholes along the way.

Like traveling on old narrow winding ( one car either way, wide) dirt roads through mountain passes? then this is for you . Absolutely some magnificent views / scenery but not for the average driver with faint hearted passengers who dont like sheer drops outside...More

Scenic drive with great views. A plus is the fact that you do not have to worry about getting fines but on this road you will want to take your time to take in the great views. Would recommend the drive to anyone but an...More

Leave yourself plenty of time to drive this route as it cannot be rushed. The road is unmade very narrow in places with hairpin bends and no barriers but the views are spectacular. Unfortunately it took longer than we expected so we completed the last...More

I have traveled this pass numerous times and every time I am still awed by the beauty. It is one of the most scenic passes in the area with spectacular views. Driving can be slow but that is part of the experience.

It was great to get off the main roads and travel on the dirt tracks of Prince Alfred's Pass. Be sure that your car and tyres are up to the journey before you set off! The road twists and turns, widens and narrows and as...More

Do keep in mind that you need a decent car and four wheel drive if the weather is or hasnt been as nice. And that the road is so narrow that you sometimes have to go back to let someone pass. Otherwise nice!

To try avoid the traffic, stop and go, ridiculous speed limit changes on the road between George and Knysna, we decided on another inland route that involved using the Prince Alfred Pass into Knysna! WOW! it is a dirt road but in good condition. The...More

beautiful overall views of knysna lagoon and the surrounding vegetation and places. one place in which the less priviledged members of society live, with free beautiful views of the ocean.

Take the longer, much quicker, main road route - not for the faint hearted - although we have done this trip twice - must be a sadist and the poor hire car didn't like it - you really do need a 4 x 4 -...More
