Went to Bartho for lunch and tried 4 different wines. The rose Blom and especially the sauvignon blanc Houtskool are really something special. We had two huge platters of delicious food to share. Bartho explained himself the wines and the art of wine to us. A great experience!

We heard about Bartho's winery and decided to try the wines before investing for our restaurants.

We were very disappointed. Although there was a small fire going the 5 German sheperds and draft through the open door made our visit most unpleasant. Apart from being unhygienic, having 5 large dogs in a dining room is not acceptable.

The lamb and waterblommetjie bredie was not good after having waited 90 minutes (no bread or olives) but the fish cake starter and 'fresh from the oven' apple crumble was superb.

The MCC was very good. The Rose was excellent and so was the Sauvignon Blanc.

This winery has tremendous potential but our visit was disappointing.

We love the wines of Bartho, but the tasting was a big disappointment. The lady who did the tasting was not knowledgable and had no background information of the wine. What should have been an experiences, became something to forget quickly.

Our Wine & Lunch group went to the most amazing wine & food pairing at Mana. Sune put together a lovely menu that was matched by their outstanding wines. Well done , we'll be back.

We popped in for a wine tasting - what a revelation. The food is superb; the atmosphere family and fun; the whole experience is so quintessential "South African" - warm hospitality and loads of chatting and laughing. The wine is excellent too - and as for the pork pies!

Went there for the Fynarts special Wednesday lunch.
Very disappointing meal. Limited menu and expensive for what we had.
Need to step up a level or two before we go again.
There are better local restaurants with better menus, better quality food and more reasonable prices in Hermanus.

Its just at the start of the Hemel & Aarde valley and it doesn't have the glitz and glamour of some of the other wineries up the valley but it delivers in spades.
There is an attached restaurant called Maná which is under the management of Bartho's wife Suné. The setting is outside in a rustic setting with wooden tables under a granadilla covered pergola. We wanted a light snack so we were coerced into trying "Suprise suprise", which turned out to be a delightful offering of local cheese, pork pie, scotch egg, bread, fresh fruit and a marvelous chutney. The single platter was enough for two people.
Wine tasting was by one of the students. Although young she made it very interesting and delivered an enjoyable wine tasting experience.
The Róse is an excellent match for the platter.

Blink and you will miss this little gem hidden at the entrance to the Hemel en Arde valley. Bartho Eksteen’s lacks the pomp of some of its neighbours. But it has a rustic charm and welcoming approach.
We were greeted by a wolfpack of German shepherd’s who herded us into the small dining room. Sune, the winemaker’s wife, was busy preparing the lunchtime offering.
It was simple and unprepossessing but consisted of a small choice of starts and mains - all hand prepared with an interesting European-Afrikaans twist.
Only ourselves - and several younger dogs - enjoyed the Friday fare which was certainly inexpensive and washed down with a bottle of Bartho’s excellent Provencal style rose.

What a great addition Maná Eatery is at Bartho Eksteen’s Wijnskool, under the very capable hand of Bartho’s wife, Suné. The food reflects a focus on substance, rather than on form, on good wholesome flavors rather than on eclectic combinations. Paired with Bartho’s delicious wines, the result is wholly satisfying. The three-course is quite adequate, but the five-course is not over-doing it for those with a hunger.

What a special occasion it was to spend a day with winemaster Bartho Eksteen and his lovely sommelier/chef wife Suné, doing a food and vertical wine paring with 10 top Saugvignon Blancs made by Bartho over the last decade. Bliss, treat yourself, it can’t get much better than this, as close to heaven in the Hemel&Aarde valley.
