It is well worth having a guide explain to you the rich history of the church. We have attended a service here. I went back this week to show a visitor the inside of the church. The woodwork on the pulpit and the enormous organ is very impressive.

For years I have been trying to enter this building but did not know it was accessed from the rear of the building. It's a true architectural gem both inside and out, however it is only open during the week. Surviving pews and crests to former patrons adorn the walls. And there was a lovely lady who showed me around... More

The Groove Kerk is the oldest Church in South Africa and resembles the atmosphere of the reformation where the Word of God is central in every service. Its an architectural masterpiece with lots of history. Add a service in your CT calendar when visiting!

Gothic style church with enclosed pews, which would be bought by wealthy families. Large wood pulpit carved by Anton Anreith and Jan Jacob Graaff with 2 lions at the base. Largest organ in the Southern Hemisphere. By the front entry, the floor stones are recycled headstones. Worth a quick visit.

The white, calm serenity of the interior offers a break from city life. Aim to visit on a Sunday after the sermon - it is worthwhile to be shown around by the knowledgeable guide. Magnificent organ music too!

This is a well preserved inner sanctum of a church that was beautifully built in the slavery days. Anton Anrieth carved the most beautiful pulpit and it is the home of South African/ Scottish Presbyterianism. Catch a recital on Sundays and look out in the press for services. Atheist or conformist it is a treat.

Go visit the Groote Kerk. I does not take long to walk though but is quite cool to see the detail in the architecture of the church.

I visit this Church a few times this year. On two occasions it was for an Christian service in the Dutch Reformed tradition. Every time I was very thankful for this building. Thanks it is so well kept, for the wonderful organ, for the history. Also for the spiritual direction that i received. You also can visit it for sightseeing... More

When we visited a lady came to us and offered to answer any questions we had...my husband had quite a few and she was very knowledgeable. We have learnt that the pipes are the oldest ones in South Africa, also the pews were very interesting as they were enclosed...apparently family would purchase a pew and use the same one all... Such an integral part of our South African history, especially in the Cape Province, visiting this church enables one to appreciate the tenacity of the early Dutch inhabitants.
