If you wish to understand the impact of Apartheid on a people, this area is a " must see". A drive or walk thru the neighborhoods provides a window into the lives of economically disparate people.

We visited Soweto during a city tour. We stopped to visit a portion of Soweto and had the opportunity to meet and speak with some of the residents. A visit to this area will demonstrate that, while apartheid has been eliminated, the after effects are still there.

One must really visit this township to get a realistic idea of the lives of those who live there in past and present.

Having worked in Soweto I've only visited the outskirts around Baragwanath Hospital but recently had the priviledge of going to Vilakazi Street... vibrant and fun

The Soweto add on from the Ho/Ho City tour is really good. Even on a cold and grey day in JHB approaching winter our guide was fun, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Highly recommend even if you only have one or two days in JHB.

I was surprised to see the many venders amongst homes on the same street. We were given a private tour the modest home of Nelson Mandela. Outside a group of children put on a street dance performance.

I was a little unsure about visiting Soweto, but am very glad we did it. We hired a tour guide to take us around. I don't think I would have liked being part of a larger, bus, tour. It's a fascinating place with a rich history. Some of the poverty is devastating.

Probably not what you expected. There are areas where people are living in the most miserable conditions and also neighborhoods of modest and attractive homes. You need a guide to share the history of the townships. When driving around, take the opportunity to just stop and walk about in some of the markets and shopping areas.

A definite must visit to Vilakazi Street. Mandela's and Archbishop Tutu's homes are in this street and lots of traders stalls selling their wares. Nice restaurants to give one a taste of traditional dishes. On a hot summer day be prepared to sit at the one of many choice restuarants for up to 3 hours enjoying the food & vibe!!!

You will not miss the common trivia-- Soweto is the only place in the world to have raised two Nobel Prize winners. Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Check out the Nelson Mandela Family Museum, ector Pietersen Museum, Regina Mundi Church, and bungi jump from the apex of iconic Soweto towers
