Went to this beacon as it was close to our b&b. A bit disappointed as the city isn't maintaining this well and also got a bit spooked by some homeless people in the bushland next to the lookout point. Nonetheless, still impressive that it has stood the test of time.

Fun to read the short Dutch inscription of the beacon and think about Van Plettenberg standing there. Since there is a platform with a great view on the bay that's rather easy. The spot is well indicated by the Tripadvisor gps coordinates. It's in between houses, about 10m from the road.

The lady at Ocean Safaris told me about this view site. It is up the road from the main beach. The view is beautiful and there were no people there. The beacon is not very impressive but there is some historical info. You can look down on the stone ruins and walk the path down which I did and then... More

From the old Timber Shed it is possible to see the deck built very near the Van Plettenberg Beacon and so it was this reference point that I kept in my mind when I tried to locate this piece of history. I didn't see any signposts, but luckily the beacon is visible from the road, but set back between two... More

This point marks the spot when the VOC claims the area for their own use with the simple fact of placing this beacon. There is also a nice view.

During 1778 Baron Joachim van Plettenberg, who was the Governor of the Cape of Good Hope, arrived in the area. He decided to give the town his name and since then it was known as Plettenberg Bay. He erected a slate possessional stone to indicate that the bay belonged to the Dutch East India Company. This stone is known as... More
