Well kept museum, clean with a good variety of pieces. Quite a few unique displays. Worth spending 2-3 hours there. The Google maps directions are wrong. Entrance is at the Guilford theatre.

It’s an interesting collection of bits and bobs covering loads of different themes in lesser or greater detail. It jumps around a lot and some of the exhibits are very dated. Saying that it is well kept and clean and the staff try. There are some fascinating exhibitions - the Coelacanth being the obvious one and well worth spending time around. R25 per adult to get in makes it affordable. The cafe is closed so don’t worry about that

Plenty parking close to entrance.
Passageways and display halls are large and spacious. The history of the city and the region is well covered by interesting displays.

We really enjoyed our visit to the museum with two boys aged 6 and 3. I did however have hayfever when we walked out. The museum cleanera needs to step up and do their work thoroughly!

The museum is lovely BUT the museum cafe / restuarant was a terrible. Our waitor messed up our order twice, the table next to us complained as well regarding their food issues. The waitor seemed to be the chef as he was wearing the uniform of a chef. He was also not friendly nor did he apologise for his mistakes which were made. He was not very clued up on certain food items that was on the menu either nor what we had asked for. Apparently this is a new restuarant which opened but with incompetent employees it will sure fail if things do not improve fast. When we wanted to speak with the manager we were told the manager is not there.....not a great start for a new restuarant....disappointing....

We were recommended to visit the museum while we were in East London. Very informative especially the coelacanth exhibition. Also about african culture and life. If your in the area pop in and learn something new.

The EL Museum is a city gem that needs a bit of polishing and dusting. It has a range of excellent exhibits and is home to some great historical artefacts. It is also "home base" to an important international collaboration on archeological studies in Pondoland. Sadly, it is not highlighted enough as a worthy destination. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that the entrance is "hidden" and for locals the entry fee may a consideration, especially for families.

We went to a lecture in the little auditorium of the museum. After this we were given the opportunity to visit this nice colonial style (inside) museum with a quick tour from the curator himself. A very passionate with a wide knowledge. We considered it as a privilege and were very excited afterwards.
If you have the chance and the time visit this gem.

This is a well maintained museum with lots of interesting displays. Bonus was the talk to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the discovery of the Ceolocanth. It is great that there is willingness of staff to interact with visitors. It is worth a visit!
