Very cool experience! Pretty incredible when you think about the fact that everything that comes & goes, by land, has to go through this tunnel. Quite an engineering feat with the delightful charm of Whittier on the other side!

In order to get to Whittier you have to use this tunnel, but it was an adventure all by itself! The tunnel is only one lane so there is a wait to go through. Even the train uses the same tunnel, so you drive on...More

Check the schedule so you don't wait, or miss the tunnel opening in your direction. We drove through and then went through it in a train. It does cost $13.00 on the way into town and free on the way out.

The tunnel is a engineering marvel in that traffic is followed by a train. Well maintained and an interesting experience.

The longest combined vehicle- rail road tunnel, 2.5 miles long. This opens every half hour from Bear Valley to Whittier, and every hour from Whittier to Anchorage. Check the timings before you travel either direction. The toll is $13 round trip.

It was there, so of course, needed to go through. There is a speed limit set so it's relatively easy to sail on through. Air is constantly being refreshed by turbine engines and there are usually plenty of cars going through. It is a painless...More

Awesome experience. A little scary the first time. All kinds of vehicles use this tunnel. Be prepared to wait your turn.

Why not? A driver you contract will take you anywhere you want to go, as long as you pay the toll. You pay the toll to get into the Whittier area, but not to leave. Are you going to Whittier or just driving through the... More

The tunnel opens at 6:00 a.m. leaving Whittier and every hour after that. They only allow so many through the tunnel to make sure it is clear for traffic coming into Whittier on every half hour. The toll to drive through... More

I just traveled through there and your motor home will have no problem. The train travels through this tunnel in between vehicles so there is plenty of room.
