The 15km highway from Sapa to the Tram Ton Pass, there are many breathtaking vantage points off the side of the road to stop & stare in silent delight. Upon the approach to the highest mountain pass in South-East Asia at 1,900 metres, the amazing views weren’t what blew me away at first, the strong winds were almost frightening at high speed on a scooter. I later learned that the cold air from the mountain’s high altitude mixes with the warm rising humid air of the valley below to cause all the trouble that you encounter up on the Pass. Who knew?
Some of the better views are of the highway cutting thru smaller passes, the highway zig-zagging down towards the Muong Hoa Valley which I assume was the actual Tram Ton Pass, views of the Hoang Lien Son mountain ranges just before the Silver Waterfall & of course views of Mt Fansipan, the highest mountain in Vietnam. A tour bus might stop at 1 or 2 of these spots on the way to some commercialised hill tribe village tour but having ur own wheels gives you the freedom to pull over anywhere so you can take silly photos & travel at your own pace. Riding the windy mountain road over a few hours & stopping off at all the mentioned attractions is most rewarding, more so than sitting in a van with other strangers.
Being a stingy bstard, I regret only putting in 50,000 VND worth of fuel ($2.50 AUD) thinking I’d never use the full tank. That half a tank is enough to get you there & back & a little extra but the mountain roads, its ups & downs, in & arounds consumes more fuel than on a normal straight road. I would have liked to have gone on further to the other side & down into the valley town where the temperature there is as sweltering as Saigon’s heat but I am completely to blame, a massive fail.
At 15kms from Sapa along Highway 4D, it is the only road in that direction & is an easy ride on a scooter, better still, it is simple clean fun. Why else would you go there? There are 2 great waterfalls a few kms away, Thac Bac (Silver Waterfall) & Thac Tinh Yeu (Love Waterfall). There are very few places to eat for the tourist, I would say the Love Waterfall kitchen is an option but serves mostly local fare. For the ladies, Love Waterfall is also the nearest sitting toilet facility around while the gents can go jungle.

Is 15km from Sapa, a roadside viewpoint accessible by motorbike taxi for 150,000 dong (authority recommended price) round trip inclusive of stopovers at Silver Waterfall and Love Waterfall.
From Sapa it is 12km to Silver Waterfall, plus 2km to Love Waterfall and another 1 km to Heaven Gate's viewpoint. It takes half an hour straight to just this viewpoint by motorbike taxi.
It gives a great view over the valleys between Fansipan and adjacent mountains; its beauty is dependant on the weather.

The view was spectacular as we were lucky to have a sunny and clear sky up here in TTP amidst the foggy weather down in Sapa township. Worth a visit!

Attached here is a photo of a signboard at the market showing motorbike taxi fares.
Instead of 150,000 dong for a round trip to Tram Ton Pass at 15km away I offered the young bike rider 200,000 dong to add in waiting time at Fansipan Cable Car Station which is only 1km out of town and on the way to Tram Ton. He gladly agreed to the price, dropped me off at the station and headed back to town. Later on he refused to bring me to Tram Ton and instead sent me back to my hotel, followed me in to the hotel demanding full payment. I hope this would bring awareness to potential visitors though Tram Ton Pass is still a worthy sight.

The road between Sapa and Lai Chau crosses the Tram Ton Pass on the northern side of Fansipan, 15km from Sapa. At 1900m this is Vietnam’s highest mountain pass. The lookout points here have fantastic views

We hired a moped and went out to see the pass.
It was foggy and foggy or not, please do not be fooled, this is a steep, and tight cornered road with trucks and buses travelling on wrong inside of the road around corners.but we are in Vietnam.
The views we saw we're amazing and we stopped many times as safe as we could to photo the views. Tram Tom pass is the highest road in Vietnam , and is a must see, but please ride with caution, or if u confident , hire a car and driver, but this place must be seen to be believed.

After arriving in Sapa, you can rent a bike for USD 5 per day (plus USD2 gas). You can can ride the bike up to Tram Ton through O Quy Ho pass, which lies between Sapa and Lai Chau city. The view is breathtaking there. In clear day, you can see Fansipan summit from afar.
Passing through Tram Ton pass for about 5 minutes, you will reach a scenic area with breathtaking view of O Quy Ho pass. You can have some local food there as well :)
Enjoy!

We took a 135cc Yamaha ($5 us) and 5 litres fuel (150k VND) to get the 2 of us out there and further.. on the highway from Sapa to the Tram Ton Pass. It was cloudy and foggy as we set off on a 100km circular ride, So many breathtaking viewing areas we stopped at - it was a quiet ride. It was often windy so take care.Good views of Silver Waterfall plus views of Mt. Fan xi pan, the highest mountain in Vietnam. Try it - if you dare! (remember rules for riding bikes in Vietnam)

Are there any good restaurants near the pass with a view?
Written 26 May 2017
No good restaurant there, but there are small stalls at that steep mountain side where you can sit on a stool to have local snacks and a drink sold by local vendors, with a good view.

Hi,
Should we go with a car up to the pass or hire someone to take us on a motorbike?
Written 26 May 2017
Motorbike is much better and enjoyable, you can easily stop at viewpoints at your leisure, unless you hit a rainy day!

Hi There,
I was just reading the reviews of tram ton on trip advisor and just wanted to know if you pre-book the motor bikes and tour guide before getting to sapa? i am very interested in going to sapa but am unsure how much i should book before i go or just book things there. Also how many days is a good amount to stay in sapa for?
thanks so much for your help!!

Not necessary to pre-book motor-bike and tours.
Except on Tet (Lunar New Year 5-days-holiday period), there are lots of motor-bike taxis waiting for passengers beside the one and only Holy Rosary Stone Church at Quang Truong Square (a very prominent open-air amphitheatre in Sapa town centre).
Hotels in Sapa can easily help out on bike rentals and guided tours. The very scenic Sin Chai to Tavan village Muong Hoa Valley walk/tour must not be missed, this is only 5km from Sapa. Cat Cat village is just 1km from Sapa. Ham Rong mountain is just behind the above mentioned church.
I would recommend at least a 3 night stay in Sapa, and to pre-book the hotel room.
2 nights will be spent on train travel to and back between Hanoi and Lao Cai. These 8pm soft sleeper train tickets can be purchased at the train stations on the day of departure, ie Ga Hanoi on Tran Quy Cap Road and Ga Lao Cai for the return train.
There is a mini-bus plying hourly from Loa Cai up to Sapa for 28,000 dong per passenger, wait at the roadside bus stop at the huge square car park in front of a tall Thien Hai Hotel just 50m from Lao Cai train station. For 500,000 dong you can charter a whole 10-seater private mini-bus from Lao Cai up to Sapa, not 500,000 dong per passenger as they will ask for.
