- Venkat RamaswamyChennai (Madras), India21 contributionsLighthouse Beach is a happening beachA happening beach with lots of options for eating sea food and other Indian food. There are lots or restaurants and hotels along the waterfront. One can hire a chair with towel and umbrella on the beach for about Rs.100 per hour or walk along the pathway in the evening is a pleasure.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 May 2024
- SteveDundee, United Kingdom36 contributionsRelaxing away from the cityEasily arranged Tuc Tuc to and from the beach for a very fair price. Once there, I very much enjoyed being away from the noise, hussel and bussel of the city and working along the beach and in the water and in a quieter part, sitting down and taking it all in. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes as well as shops but I just loved relaxing and doing very little.Visited November 2024Travelled soloWritten 15 November 2024
- RoscoBHAWorthing, United Kingdom40 contributionsNice, convenient beach for a few day rest and recoveryThe nearest beach to a typical European resort beach that we found in Kerala. A scenic bay with rolling waves, fringed by dozens of restaurants, shops and street traders plying their wares. Plenty of comfortable loungers on the busy sandy beach. One of the cleaner town beaches that we found in Kerala, but don’t expect Western levels of cleanliness or maintenance. However, some of the local restaurants serve great seafood and everything is very affordableVisited January 2025Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 January 2025

We were staying at a hotel several kilometres away and came down on a Tuck Tuck in the evening to do some gift shopping. This area is very touristy which was fine after several weeks of travelling the country. Very easy to by little gifts. You can barter if you want to. We just got big purchases from just a few shops and got the owners to do a discount.

I can’t be sure about that, but for India it’s very good and very tourist friendly.
lots of restaurants, cafes (selling alcohol too - in mugs!) shops, money exchanges, hotels and self catering acc.
What is nice to see that it’s very popular with locals and North Indians too, all enjoying the beach together.
Some great banter with the hawkers (haggle hard guys), fruit ladies (lush jack fruit) and sunbed sellers (pamper to your every need)
Lighthouse in great condition.
Plenty of surfing and bodyboarding. Speedboats too.
Fishing boats on the beach at northern end and after fab sunsets, they all go out to sea.
Not much to dislike - warning, waves can be strong so expect to be smashed about a bit (good fun)

Strange title?, not really, this is a great seaside beach. However, visitors from outside India should be aware this is not the Mediterranean shores and the wearing of mankini’s,bikini’s and other such garments will attract a lot’s of attention of all kinds.
Back to the beach, it’s now well populated with local tourists, with families playing on the waters edge with the backdrop of the many restaurants catering to all budgets and tastes. Try this place it’s very much alive and kicking.

Amazing place with beautiful views! The entry is just 20 Rs and you can go all the way to the top of the light house. There is a little cafetaria with tea, coffee and snacks that also has fantastic view. Absolutely worth visiting.

Walked along this beach to go and view the lighthouse. Lots of eateries, quaint shops, ladies selling fresh fruit etc.
Beach was not overcrowded at all. It was also very clea.
Can hire sun beds with parasols for around 200 rupees.
In fact we enjoyed this area so much we have decided to rent accommodation on this beach for a few months next year.

Been coming to this beach for over 10 years. But this year the experience has been pretty awful. Constantly have phones thrust in face taking pictures. Anyone on beach lounger will have men walking up and down taking photos. Beach lounger guys do their best to try and stop this and tourists ask why are you taking my picture but too many to stop.
WHY DO So MANY INDIAN MEN DO THIS???!!!!What are theses photos for?????????
In many western cultures taking pictures of naked children is illegal and not acceptable so having phones and cameras taking shots of partly clothed or naked tourists children is so offensive and worrying for parents. So sadly last time spent in Kerela and we will be renting a house in Sri Lanka for a few months next year instead.

The beach has lot of rocks and due to algae formation on the rock it was a smelly beach. Little dangerous at this time due to strong currents and stones. However locals suggested that the beach is better between November and February but I have not experienced it

Away from the centre of Kovalam Beach, with all its amenities, the OTHER SIDE of the lighthouse, accessed down a side street is the lovely Vizhinjam Beach. As well as great waves for swimming, we had a magical moment watching local fishermen push their heavy boat across the sand, assisted by a dozen burly Italian tourists. You’ll be pleased you took the trouble to walk the extra five minutes from the center.

How do you get to lighthouse beach by public transportation fron varkala?
Written 30 December 2018
Guess u are in Varkala. hence take a taxi to Kovalam- approximate Rs 1500-1800 cost. The Lighthouse is known to all of them.
Makes sense to stay in Kovalam few days ...small quant place.
I stayed at a very nice and budget Inn called Beatles Inn which is actually right next to this Lighthouse. there are timings to it (remains shut in the afternoon). And had an AWESOME view of the ocean...
All the best.. n happy to answer any other questions if u have.

is lighthouse, kovalam,Hawa and samudra beach one and the same and which is recommended to visit and why?
TIA
Written 21 February 2018
They are all different beaches, each worth a visit. Samudra beach is rocky and not much there. The lighthouse has great views. There is a lift to the top floor but then a steep ladder to the viewing platform.

What is the approximate cost of airport to light house Beach travel by taxi or auto?
Has anybody used any taxi aggregator or radiocab like ola?
Please help me out here.
Written 3 November 2015
Hello,
Frm Trivandrum airport we took an auto to lighthouse beach costing around Rs.350-400 (we went 1 yr ago though). Onlu local autos & taxi are available, no ola or uber.
You can negotiate the costs though. If u book them fr 2 way journey, then they agree for negotiations.
Note: If u want to visit the lighthouse, entry time is upto 5pm.
Have a happy journey.

Which hotel/B&B should I stay at lighthouse beach which is clean, easily accessible and close to the beach?
My budget is around Rs 1000 to 1500 per night.
A good breakfast will be an added bonus.
Written 2 November 2015
You could stay at jhonny's beach house. Its a small coz guest house right at the beach and it will fit well within your budget. For breakfast there are great shacks right outside at the beach where you can get variety and all this should fit in your budget of 1000-1500.
To get more info about kovalam you could visit my blog travellersappetite.in

Someone said "All beaches in kerala are inaccessible after dusk." Is it so? I want to see Sunset in Kovalam. Which will be the best place for it? Suggest me considering that I am there with family - my wife. Also how far it would be from Taj Kovalam.
