Whilst wandering the ancient town then you will no doubt stumble across the Tianhou Palace...and at just 10 yuan entry, it is well worth popping in. It isn't a huge place but is a nice walled sanctuary away from the over commercialised ancient culture street. There are many side temples with various and sometimes very unusual looking gods. They have a large bell here too which an elderly security guard beckoned us to gong with the wooden baton. We did and was quite loud and cool to do...the security guard then beckoned us to leave a donation in the collection pot. I was going to leave a small offering anyway (might as well hedge my bets for when I do pop my clogs...one never knows and it is good to be prepared haha). Anyway, just as I popped a couple of yuan in the pot, another security guard comes over and ushers us out of the palace before gesticulating and reprimanding the older security guard for cajoling money from us. I was offering anyway so the older security guard is absolved I think :-)
Definitely worth popping in...

A beautiful temple complex. There's also a gift/souvenir shop and a small kind of museum in the premises. All in all, if you like temples, you can spend a nice 1 hour wandering around the halls and marveling at the statues and architecture.

Temple of the Queen of Heaven
Temple of the Queen of Heaven, popularly known as Tianhou Taoist Temple or Tianhou Palace is located in the center of Ancient Cultural Street of Tianjin. It is famous for worship of Mazu (Matsu) or Tianhou, the Goddess of Sea and Queen of the Heaven. Initially constructed in 1326 for the marine sacrifices by sailors and fishermen it served for centuries as main venue for prayer to the Goddess of Sea. A big vessel is placed in the center of the temple which contains incense burning since centuries. The main hall contains statue of Queen of Heaven wearing a phoenix coronet and rainbow robe.

Busy temple with beautiful buildings and screens. Worth a visit especially if you are exploring the Ancient street. This was probably the favourite part of the ancient street.

Walking down the Tianjin ancient culture street almost to its end, we found the Tianhou Palace situated on one side of about 1/6- acre square with an ancient theater on its opposite side. Unlike several "temples" I've been to in other areas, its admission was free, which means that it could accept personal donations from its pious prayers and worshipers.
Even though I'd been to the temple many times, I still liked to walk through the front hall that housed the four ugly warrior giants. Then I looked for the hall prepared for God of Wealth on the left-hand side of the yard. You might imagine that I kowtowed though I didn't necessarily label myself as a Mazu (a goddess living over 1,050 years ago and said to protect fishermen on the sea) believer, I quite understood the feelings of the fisherman's families.
Before leaving the palace compound, I performed my ritual-like beating of a large fortune bell. It required a donation, so I did donate for my prayer by beating the bell.
