This is a must see while it is still here. In my own life, I have watched this glacier disappear. It is one of the coolest sites you'll ever see,

We chose to rent a car and visit Mendenhall on our own instead of with a tour. We knew that we wanted to spend more time than any of the tours allowed for. We saw the video in the visitor center, listened to a ranger talk, and walked to Nugget Falls. It rained a little, not that you notice when... More

We opted for the Helicopter flight to the glacier and it was an "once in a lifetime" adventure that I have now done twice. The flight there was jaw dropping with snowy peaks rising around us. Once there we were guided to an exposed stream that was reportedly ice melt from snow that fell a hundred years ago. Everyone was... More

We wentalked there in a little group in April. The trail left arround the lake, starts right from the parking lot, trail conditions in april: some snow, mostly muddy, bring good boots! You approuch the glacier within can 2,5 h with breaks, there are marking signs how much the glacier has been melting since 1942. On the right side of... More

This was one of my favorites experiences when i took the Alaska Cruise. This was the best tour that i make on my trip. The Glacier is simply espectacular and a unique experience! This would be part of a bucket list of every person.

Close to town, you'll always remember your trip to Mendenhall Glacier. We visited in winter, and trudged across the frozen lake. Absolutely breathtaking. Bring your camera. The visitor center was very nice with lots of information. Not overly crowded. You'll want to bring water to drink along the way. Snacks would be nice too.

Whether walking across the ice to the toe of the glacier, hiking the trails, walking to nugget falls or just spending time in the visitor center, the glacier is always a fun family outing.

We walked ("hiked" would be too strong a word) out the trail as far as we could before being blocked by the waterfall. A magnificent view and waterfall roar awaited us. The glacier has, like all glaciers, been retreated for a while and looks like it may be gone completely in our lifetime. See it before that happens!

Instead of opting for a tour with the cruise ship we were on, we decided as a family of four adults to explore the Mendenhall glacier independently since it was a cheaper option and we could spend an ample amount of time there at our own pace. It cost us about $30/person round-trip to take the white shuttle from the... More

At the moment the lake is still frozen, so you can hike across out to the glacier and check out those ice caves. Totally worth it! Take good footwear with grips, because it's very slick in the ice caves. Wouldn't recommend for people who aren't particularly mobile or sure-footed.
