Such a beautiful park! The last bit of the road is gravel, but you can drive straight to a beautiful little spit looking out over the water and mountains. A nearby hike will take you to Moose Meadows where you can see the glacier across the water. Lovely!

I'm glad we opted not to stay at this campground. The road is navigable, even with a trailer, but potted and bumpy enough that I wouldn't want to drive it several times to go into town and explore the region. We did spend an afternoon hiking out to a point to see the nearby waterways and glaciers, which are gorgeous. The campsites themselves are very wooded without much of a view.

After our failed visit to the Kroschel Wildlife Center yesterday (don’t bother visiting), we had the most amazing walk in the Chilkat State Park today. It has everything from temperate rain forests to glacier views and restored our faith in Haines as a tourist destination.

One suggestion: the maps of the walk available locally and the signage for the starting point are crap. Market yourselves better, Haines (But maybe the locals are keeping it for themselves!)

Fantastic walk towards Sublime Point.

We did a four hour trek on the Seduction ton Trail in this wonderful park. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to experience such a magnificent natural environment walking through exceptionally well maintained trails.

You may have camped in some pretty great places, but Chilkat State Park, located near the southern end of Chilkat Peninsula south of Haines, Alaska, is absolutely fabulous. The campsites are spacious and tree-sheltered, set far enough apart to offer privacy. There is beach access, a boat ramp, hiking opportunities, AND a breathtaking view of glacier-draped peaks, waterfalls, and a narrow bay that is home to waterfowl, seals, and whales. This is a must-visit,

Getting there required going over a gravel road full of very deep potholes then going down a very steep hill with sharp switch back turns. Twice as bad coming back out. Use 4 wheel drive (if you have it ) to make the climb easier through all the large ruts. The view of rainbow glacier was worth it! Be sure to go in the morning so the sun is on the glacier for great pictures.

We ended our day in Chilkat State Park after exploring north of Haines. A really beautiful park with camp sites, boat ramp and a picnic area. We enjoyed a break in the picnic area viewing the glacier as various wildlife. Seeing mountains rise from sea level to their peaks really gives you a sense of their size and grandeur. We did not get a chance to hike any trails, but if we can return that will be on our list.

The trail is very well maintained and quite diverse as it travels through dense forest, moose meadows, and along the coast. Very nice hike. There are some up and down sections but this is a relatively flat trail for 7 miles. We went on a rainy drippy day and still enjoyed it.

We took the relatively short drive to the park (about 15 minutes from town) and were very impressed with the views of the bay and the mountains and glaciers on the other side. We would definitely recommend visiting in the morning if you would like good light for photography as the mountains are to the west of the bay. The photo shown was taken in the late afternoon with most of the mountainside in shade. A must stop if you are in Haines.

The hike through this temperate rain forest was beautiful. Our guide, Kris, was great. . . very knowledgeable and personable. At our rest stop, he had all kinds of goodies for us including hot chocolate and salmon balls. it was memorable and exhilarating.
