We travelled here on our way to the airport in Anchorage after our cruise. The views are spectacular. We were given about 20 minutes to walk around when the driver stopped. We did not stay in this park just long enough to take a couple of dozen photos--maybe more, because every time you moved you saw something more! It truly is a wonderful visit!

Were We hiked in Chugach state park while staying at the Alyeska hotel in Girdwood. It was a fun hike with beautiful scenery. The trail was extremely well maintained and there was information posted along the way.

Stayed at the Alyeska resort and the Winner Creek trailhead was right there. Nice hiking through a beautiful forest. The trails are well maintained with benches along the way. Would like to see some identification labels for some of the plants along the way. Really enjoyed my time spent hiking in this park.

On the way from Anchorage to the fishing camp, the driver stopped to show us some salmon spawning in a little stream. It was a beautiful area with primitive restroom facilities. As a "potty stop" it is a 5, but I can't say how good the whe park is.
I have to compare this to parks in general and national parks specifically. On that scale,it looks average.

You probably should check a map of this state park as it stretches from Anchorage down towards Girdwood and contains numerous sites to see including waterfalls, hiking trails on the historic Iditarod, wildlife, and scenic vistas. Turnagain Arm and Eklutna Lake provide water areas to explore. There is also a nature center with programs. With such a wide variety of things to do, this state park is a must see.

I had the extreme good fortune to meet Ken, who had a scope set up at Bird Point, pointed to the Chugach Mountains. He is often there looking for bears, and sharing his finds with the public. He zooms in when he finds a critter and lets anyone and everyone have a close up view. While I was there, he spotted a huge blond grizzly chowing down on a cub he had killed. A little later a black bear with cubs came by and the big grizz actually stood straight up and ran the black bear off, defending his territory and kill. Then a couple of hours later, he found a grizzly sow with a 1 year old and a new cub, just snacking on greens. I've seen bears several times in Alaska, including at McNeil River, but this was just 40 minutes from my house! And these were all wild bears, not accustomed to humans, and we were not intruding on them nor were they a danger to us. It was so cool. So I'm going to drive the highway lots this summer and ALWAYS stop at Bird Point, going up to see if Ken is there sharing his expertise. This is his hobby. He calls it his ministry! So cool. I just had to share.

There are so many different and great hikes, trails, day-use areas, rivers, lakes, and such in Chugach State Park. There is something for everyone. Flattop Mountain is a fantastic hike. Thunderbird Falls is an easy hike in a different part of the park. There are nearly unlimited possibilities.

Hike to Exit glacier - easy hike and fantastic view. Highly recommend if you're in Seward anyway to do a day cruise. Don't need a guide. Stop at the ranger office if you have questions.

The trees are alive and the colors are beautiful. Nothing like Autumn in Alaska. Throw in the snow capped mountains and you've got a photographic smorgasbord!

This park covers nearly a half-million acres and has multiple access points from Girdwood to Chugiak. There are hiking trails, ski trails, biking trails, and access to the backcountry. By all means if you're in town for a short visit, drive to the Glen Alps parking lot and check out the view from the overlook- you can see five mountain ranges from there, and most of the Anchorage bowl.

No, the Chugach State Park is huge. Try to find a map of the park and then pinpoint areas of interest to you. There are several pocket-sized trail guides that will provide details of the various trails -- distance, difficulty level, how much time to allow, etc. I found these trail guides in convenience stores, bookstores, and touristy shops. Some may be found at park visitors' centers (however, many areas of the park are unmanned by park rangers, so get a map before you head out.) If you are hiking, be sure to carry adequate water with you. When we hiked several trails, we saw abundant wildlife nearby, including moose and bears. So, be aware of your surroundings and cautious at all times. If you have limited time, I would recommend the Lake Eklutna area (north of Anchorage). It is a beautiful lake, with several trails available. The lakeside trail is an easy hike, but long. The Twin Peaks trail affords some beautiful views of the lake, but it is rated difficult -- and it is. However, if you want to try that trail, be aware that the viewpoint from about halfway up the trail -- there is a benchseat there at a curve in the trail -- is nearly as good as the view from the top of the trail. If you stop at that point, you will get a great view and will not wear yourself out climbing the remainder of the steep trail, which ends with scrambling over rocks and tundra at the top. It is on this trail that a moose crossed our trail early on, and then later on the steep part we saw two bear cubs and a mama bear frolicking on a nearby rise. It is a good idea to wear bear bells and carry bear spray along with you if you decide to climb to the top of this trail.

will visit Chugach in Aug 15. Can anyone suggest a raft float that's not too boring but does not require a practice swim?
