Take a day trip out to Portage. Beautiful drive out there. Great coast. Lots of water and mountains. Plus the glaciers while there still there.

On a recent visit to Alaska my wife and I with another couple took the hike to Portage Glacier. It's not the easiest of hikes, especially the start, but the views are phenomenal and well worth it. Once reaching the ridge, Portage Glacier and lake...More

The visitor center is an interesting place with many "hands-on" displays and exhibits. Be sure to watch the 20 minute film and walk down to Portage Lake. There are many campgrounds and hiking trails in the immediate area.

We stopped here as part of our journey on the Seward highway. It is beautiful, There are trails to go on, but we ran out of time. The Portage lake is beautiful and the visitors center shows you all about the glaciers in the area.

You need to do the cruise to see Portage, but it was worth it. Inexpensive compared to other glacier tours and only an hour, which was plenty of time. Got up close for great pics. The boat staff - driver, rangers, support - were all...More

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
Does this tour usually sell out? We would like to buy tickets when we get there so we can use a discount coupon instead of making reservations over the phone. We are coming up around Sept 7th.

That is a very hard question to answer. There are so many factors to consider, such as the weather. They are having a harsh winter this year. I would book in advance to be sure, but call the company for their read on it.
Do tours run in February?
