We decided to walk up to the needle and back down rather than the full cross island walk. It was a matter of logistics, we had a car and didn't know how we'd make it back to the car at the start point. In hindsight, the logistics aren't that hard (bus goes to either end) and we wished we went... More

Our accommodation had bikes so we rode up past the power station and chained then at the start of the trail. It took 1 hour to get to the Needle and another 1.5 hours to get to the other side... Then bus back around into town, and walked back to collect the bikes. The track is easy to follow and... More

This is a proper bush hike. Tree roots, river beds, ropes and rocks. I fell and injured myself on the way down. It took us over two hours for me to crawl, slide, and limp my way out. That being said, the views are wonderful and the bush is beautiful. Feeling adventurous? Give it a go. Safer when it is... More

A group of us decided to do this walk as a great outdoor activity. It is recommended to do this from north to south. Firstly, let me say I enjoyed the walk and the boost to my fitness it gave me on a lazy relaxed break. Fitness is important for this walk, and take plenty of water and snacks. The... More

OK, I'm 58 and half fit, after the first 20 minutes I was reduced to 10 steps and a rest! The main obstacle is a steep ridge covered in tree roots that act like a winding staircase. Then there are the ropes and chains to assist you with the ascent to the side of the Needle. Take it easy and... More

I'd read all the reviews and thought it would take me at least 3 hours but we were done in just over 2hours. Take plenty of water. The walk up is very steep and you'll need to replace the moisture you loose.

Our group of six did the cross island walk from North to South. leaving early in the morning. There was light rain as we set off and it made the track quite slippery. The track to the needle was better defined than the path on the southern side (although there are orange markers on the trees). The second part had... More

We did the cross island trek starting in Avarua and will admit that it was more challenging than I expected. We're in our late 30's with a decent fitness level. It rained on and off while we on the trail which didn't help and really slowed us down on the trek back down. It's mostly steep climbing up roots on... More

Do this walk from North to South, starting from Avarua. It's a short hike to the needle which is not one of the highest points of the island but still affords an excellent view. If you're short on time or don't want a long walk, or don't want to catch the bus on the other side of the island (back... More

We are moderately fit so were prepared for a bit of activity on our crossover island walk from North to South exciting at the waterfall. The usual precautions should apply - take water, sunblock, a little of food, wear good shoes plus tell ppl of your plans. I wouldn't recommend this climb to anybody with young children below say 8-10... More
