Unlike the big supermarkets that sell imported goods, here local produce is dominant. Actually the market consists of a number of different blocks. One of these is called Mercado Central 1880, but locals refer to the whole area as mercado. Most tourists visit the central block only. Here prices are slightly (10 to 20%) higher than in the surroundings. Costa... More

For a real cultural experience, go here. There's all kinds of shopping from the usual souvenirs to groceries and birds! Vendors also sell their wares on the street. It's crowded but cool to experience!

Central Market gives a flair of Costa Rica. You will find handmade items as well as mass produced folkloric items. Ask questions about it origin. Great woodwork and coconut shell fun items. Masks and framed Butterflies to display in your home. We enjoyed walking through the Market and visit with the Vendors. Great gift items and souvenirs.

We had a great lunch for about 18USD at Hermanas Tapia Soda. Clean, tasty and very local food. Is a good place to eat if you are into trying local places.

There are so many little shops inside the Central Market, that sell everything from fresh meat, poultry and fish, shoes, clothes, hardware, fruit, vegetables, natural herbs, etc. Walkways are narrow and tight. If you don't go with a guide, it would be easy to get lost! It's a cultural experience!

It's a small market that offers mostly fresh produce. There are a few side sellers that were selling yard sale type of items and also a few vendors selling trolls with a few mixes items.

Best place for shopping and having delicious cuisine; shops have variety local art and handicraft for souvenir, and restaurants that serve excellent cuisine. Do not miss it.
