Old fort. You can visit rooms that were part of the old military fort including the cells. Best part is the butterfly garden. Amazing and don't miss the crysalises. Price is reasonable. Takes about 1 hour. For precolumbian you need to visit the jade museum.

Comfortable and well laid out. Flow was easy to follow and well documented. An opportunity to learn something new.

The setting is fantastic, but the execution of the museum is very amateur and leaves very much to be desired. Entire, critical portions of CR history are missing including the crucial time when CR was the world's most successful Socialist society until it was undermined by the World Bank, IMF and CIA among others. The audio isn't great, the former... More

This building was once a fort and the place in which Costa Ricans decided to get rid of their Army in 1948. It has a butterfly garden, and is architecturally interesting but many of the exhibits are being restaged so some of the rooms were closed. It will be very good when they finish it. There are very good views... More

I am surprised at the negative reviews in TripAdvisor about this Museum because I found it very interesting . It is quite different from the other museums in town so it's not really a choice between seeing the Jade Museum and the National Museum or not. They're just very different. The museum is located in the former military Fortress so... More

Lovely butterfly room to look at before the history and artefacts. Take time to look at the archival black and white photos in the administrative quarters. No need to take a guide if you speak English or Spanish

Although many areas are under renovation, a visit to the "mariposary", the butterfly area, makes it all worthwhile. You can watch them feed, fly around, and see their birth! Pictures can be taken that will rival any nature magazine. Recommended.

Free the day we were there - not sure if it normally is. Great history of Costa Rica and neat artifacts.

This museum had lots of exhibits similar to the Gold Museum but more! As soon as you walk in, it opens into a huge butterfly garden. Butterflies were all over the place and they were gorgeous! I had never seen most of them before and I liked how they were free to fly. No one was touching or messing with... More
