The Jade Museum and of precolumbian culture is positioned as an innovative state-of-the-art cultural proposal in the protection and conservation of archaeological heritage in Central America. Located in the center of Costa Rics's capital, the building was especially constructed to house the museum's collection, its architecture evoking a cut jade block. Its five levels exhibit objects crafted by artisans specialized in solving their daily subsistence needs, their spiritual and political world.

When you enter the building and pay your admission, it feels as if you're left hanging. We didn't notice any signage indicating where to start since the main floor seemed to have more of an office building vibe. As a consequence, we missed a small room on the entry level. The major portion of the museum is second floor and... More

Five floors of amazing collections didn't allow us enough time to really zero in on everything but it is well worth a visit.

This is a good complement to the gold museum, with an extensive collection of jade artifacts. Also an extremely mesmerizing shaman video figure - really awesome.

This museum is huge and very impressive from the inside - new and interactive on the inside. Plenty of exhibits to see, but make sure to give yourself plenty of time to take advantage of all the artifacts that they have. A bit expensive, but Art City Tour allowed us free access - a good location and beautiful collection.

Do not miss the penises. There is a great exhibit explaining pre-columbian sexual practices, initiation rites, and gender roles. Not really about jade but rather an excellent museum dedicated to pre-columbian culture in the three main archaeological zones of Costa Rica.

The Museum is located in the centre of San Jose, in a large modern building, on 5 levels. The exhibitions are well designed, with English signage. It presented the jade in the context of the cultural life of the time. Very worthwhile visit. Admission price is reasonable for the experience.

First, it's important to understand that jade is not found in Costa Rica. It came primarily in trade from Guatemala. That said, this museum has a huge collection of jade, both jadeite and nephrite, from all over Central America. Second, if you have been to other jade museums and been exposed to the history of Precolumbian cultures in MesoAmerica, you... More
