- Alicia43 contributionsDefinitely do the guided tour if you have 40 minutes - 1 hour to spendIf you have time, I definitely recommend doing the 40 minutes guided tour. The two actors get really into character, especially the actress who plays multiple roles. Plus they are knowledgeable and answered a lot of questions about the theatre. They talk about the theatre room, upstairs, the paintings, sculptures and historical people connected to the theatre. I also recommend booking the tour in advance, but you pay on the day of your visit. I booked the 11am tour in advance. When paying and collecting my ticket, there was a couple behind me who also wanted to do the 11am tour but it was fully booked and the next available slot was the 1pm tour. You can email uboleteria@teatronacional.go.cr to book. The price was CRC 3,500 per person.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 11 February 2024
- Luc SDendermonde, Belgium8,632 contributionsVery beautiful and special theaterThere are certainly nicer and larger theaters, but this is very special: everything was designed, made and shipped in Europe and put together on site. With a very nice result. Very good guides who tell their story with passion. And in the café you can drink very nice coffee...Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 February 2024
- MarianneNew York6 contributionsFascinating quick tour of Costa Rican historyYou must see this museum when in Costa Rica. It is located in an old fortress, where you can see old prisoner cells, the lookout towers, and other parts of the fort. You enter through a lovely butterfly garden and the history of the country unfolds as you walk through the exhibitions that have transformed the fort. There are exhibits from and about indigenous peoples and all stages of the country's history. Very well presented, with fabulous artifacts and through and engaging presentations. I learned so much about the country, its art, its politics, its ecomony, and the current plans of its people. Do not miss this.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 February 2024
- Albert BCincinnati, Ohio494 contributionsCharmingI didn't expect to enjoy my visit so much. Excellent guided tour with "charming" visits for characters from Costa Rica's past. Amazing floor that is raised every four years for new president's gala. Treasure of art work. Cafe is a little pricy but very comfortable setting. Safe walking area. 10 minutes from Holiday Inn.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 25 February 2024
- amdgriggsSheffield, United Kingdom1,690 contributionsStunning theatre, excellent tour, lovely theatre cafeThe glowing reviews are absolutely right: this place is a gem and the hour-long tour is both informative and fun. Hard to believe the amount of gold leaf! - and it’s great to be able to see much of the restoration taking place. The video about the auditorium floor, which can all be raised and lowered, is just one remarkable element. Listen out for the explanation for the separate entrance for those with tickets for the third circle top…! Highly recommended (& don’t miss the chance to have an excellent coffee & some equally excellent food in the wonderful theatre cafe next door - a timeless gem).Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 February 2024
- NonnyYork, United Kingdom93 contributionsNumber 1 attraction in San Jose.An absolutely beautiful little gem of a theatre. Worth the guided tour despite it being limited- you don't go on the stage or behind it. The guides are knowledgeable & fun. The coffee shop attached is good if pricey.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 March 2024
- Mudeford 123185 contributionsWorth a visitThere are only two tours per day in English and both are in the afternoon which is a shame. We went on the Spanish tour as this was the only way we would get to see inside the building. It is very beautiful and worth the visit. The guides were very enthusiastic. Shame we could not understand.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 March 2024
- Will CMakati, Philippines42 contributionsNice English tour. Tips for getting ticket in my review.Beautiful building. Nice bits of history. Tasty cafe. Interesting part of town. **HINT! For English speaking tours you need to go to the box office outside of the theater on the right side. (This is not very obvious). There was only one English tour on the day of my tour, at 3:00pm. The other 8 or so tours were all in Spanish and several were sold out. It cost around $8 per person.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 30 April 2024
- MaryFBDublin, Ireland223 contributionsInteresting building & entertaining tourThis is a short but interesting & informative tour. A good history & social explanation of Costa Rica. The actors are very entertaining. Tour takes about 45 minutes. Only one English tour per day. Our tour was at 10am. You can visit the lobby & coffee shop without taking the tour.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 September 2024
- PABLO C209 contributionsTica Culture IconThe Theatre is located in the heart of San Jose. When you access the main hall, you can see paintings and sculptures that mark an era and neoclassical style (1897). It is a small theater (it has a capacity of 850), but no less distinguished. You can visit the beautiful cafe located on the left of the Hall (which retains aesthetics not only on the ceilings and walls but also on the tables and chairs) and guided tours are also offered. We went to witness the premiere of the ballet "in the branches of the cypress" with a very complete and accomplished putting. We are pleased to have known this National Theatre and to have agreed to witness a Play of this level.Visited December 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 December 2024

We had a special tour with the builder of the Teatro and his wife Manuela (Claudia). They performed in great costumes of the time and were very old or had long since died.
The seats in the interior were made in New York 100 years ago. There are 700 seats in the entire building. The artists who created the ceiling paintings came from Italy.
The entire floor in the interior of the theater has to be brought to the level of the stage by hand - even today, 12 people are needed to do this below the Teatro. This creates a spacious ballroom.
The original angel, formerly on the roof, is also inside on the first floor.
Manuela disappeared after a short time and suddenly reappeared below a ceiling painting as the Carmen (Claudia) depicted there. She had apparently fallen out of the ceiling painting and was standing in the middle of the staircase.
The lamps were made in Belgium, by the way. Costa Rica was the third country with electronic lamps after London and New York.
In the middle of the beautiful theater is the gift box, on the 3rd floor there are benches with the cheapest prices but they say the best acoustics.
We walked through the rooms, which were really impressive. On the ceiling in the large hall is a picture of the Spanish Mona Lisa and the coats of arms of Costa Rica's 7 regions.
When we arrived back in the foyer after about an hour, we were greeted again by Claudia, who had finished her announced coffee break... It was a very entertaining, varied tour. Christian also said goodbye to us in civilian clothes and both received applause and a tip.

The lunch at the adjoint cafe was delicious. I went into the theatre as part of a guided tour (available in English and Spanish) and it was brilliantly done. The staff dressed up as characters to recount the history of the place and kept us entertained the whole time.

This beautiful and historic place is really worth visiting. I recommend taking the complete tour of the theater and listening to the guide tell the story of the theater while you walk through the beautiful rooms and access the seating area and the stage. Everything very impressive. There is a cafe inside with very good offers of food and drinks. You can access the theater cafe without having to do the full tour, although I really recommend doing the full tour.

So, we were disappointed in that we didn't get to see the inside. The Teatro has changed it's policies and you can no longer just walk up and buy tickets. They are now assigning tickets by time slots. We were on part of a larger city tour of San Jose and since we didn't have the time to wait around till the next opening, we had to forego our visit, despite the fact it wasn't that crowded.

Our tour in English lasted a bare 30 minutes. The guide kept giving the impression that he didn't know what to say, and there was one actor playing a part, also giving the impression that she didn't know what to say, and was relieved when it was time to leave. We learned more about the museum from our city walk guide.

Uor 10 am tour in English was run by a man and woman who were both actors in the theater. The audience seating area can be converted into a ballroom by removing the seats and elevating the floor. All around great tour.

This is a must see if you are in San Jose.
The tours are done in English or Spanish.
It is the most unusual tour that we have ever been on. The guides are actors and done in Period costume. Not only that, There are acting it out as players in the actual beginning of the theater in 1897.
The story of how it came to be was that the owners of the coffee plantations became wealthy and sent their children to school in Europe. When they returned, they decided to introduce some of the European culture to Costa Rica.
With this in mind, the theater is designed after the grand European Opera Houses.

I was a little skeptical that this was a must-see, but the guides add so much to the experience. It’s the story of the building and how that’s intertwined with the whole country’s history that really connects the dots. It left me thinking back to Marquez’ _Hundred Years of Solitude_ with the weird neocolonial projects, the United Fruit Company, and other things I could mention but they’d be spoilers! Oddly, the café isn’t included on the tour but it is well worth a visit, either before or after.

This is a gem. A beautiful Victorian era theatre being lovingly restored in the centre of San Jose. You are shown around by two guides who are actors and who dress up in character to play different characters including the president of Costa Rica at the time the theatre was built. All huge fun and very informative. Not to be missed!

Not only were we mesmerized by the art and architectural beauty of the theater but the performance tour was, by far, the most entertaining and informative one we have ever taken anywhere in the world!
Yingry Rodríguez and Christian Lopez provided our group a most interesting way in capturing and maintaining our attention by playing the President and First Lady during the time period the national theater was created as well as portraying workers seen painted on the ceiling within the theater. Both in costume with discreet changes of costume “off stage” while we were distracted with the tour by the other guide.
We took the 1pm Spanish-language tour. I am not sure if this is available in English but I would ask about either being available to enjoy when you purchase your tickets.
It is not to be missed!

what is scheduled in the theater for February 20 2019

I did try and answer this question, but it looks like it didn't register. The best place to get the performance schdule would have been directly from the Theatre web site anyway.
Apologies for the delay.

Will there be any performances on Dec 10/11 or the 27th at the theater?

According to the theater's event calendar in the website, the only performances for the month of December are on December 2nd. Keep checking the website, for they may get more performances later. Hope this helps and have a great trip to CR!

Hi, kurt. What would you like to know about this attraction?
Written 23 August 2017
This theater is the most treasured building for Costa Rica. It's lobby is beautiful. I recommend you either take a guided tour for $10.00 usd or if have the opportunity, enjoy a play/performance .
Their cafeteria is very nice and quite affordable, I suggest you enjoy one of their coffee beverages . It's architecture itself is just worth to visit .
