    Impressive!
We visited this museum in May 2023 and we loved it. There is so much history and so much to look at that our time spent, was too short. We honestly did not want to leave. We enjoyed learning about the blue butterflies in the conservatory for them. The building is huge painted in a yellow, with so much history. We learned a lot in the very short time we were there. Highly recommended!

    Beautiful architecture
We did a walking tour the day before and decided we wanted to see inside. It cost 7,000 colones. The theater is amazing. The guide is an actor there so they put on a small show. Definitely worth visiting.

    Not to miss
The museum is interesting for anyone visiting Costa Rica. The visit starts with a walk through a butterfly garden, very nice! Then you can learn more about the history of this tiny (and now peaceful) country, one of the most stable in Latin-America, if not the most stable. Finally, the archeology section is quite interesting, especially because you do not expect it here.

Excellent background to the history of CR
We stopped off in San Jose at the start of our 4 week road trip around CR and thought this was a must do. We were staying close by in the Hotel President so we were only a 5 minute walk away. We entered through the butterfly park and saw quite a few before moving into the various exhibitions. The history of the indigenous people and immigration to build the railways and work in the coffee and banana trades were very interesting. A must do if in Dan Jose

    Excellent museum
An excellent museum highlighting aspects of Costa Rica’s history from early times, through the colonial period, to the current day. Well designed exhibits, with explanations in Spanish and English. I learned a lot about the history of the country. The setting is great, in an old fort, with a great central garden with views to the mountains. Entering through a butterfly garden was a pleasant surprise, and a nice way of demonstrating Costa Rica’s keenness to protect their wildlife. Not expensive to enter. We spent around two hours there.

We allowed a couple of hours to visit the museum, and were probably there more than that. It's a huge, rambling place, and every time you turn a corner there is more to see. By the time we got to the final part--touching on how Costa Rica has modernized-- we were quite tired. We loved entering through the butterfly garden. The museum doesn't offer a place to eat; but only a couple of blocks away on Calle 17 (walk thru Parque Nacional) there are a couple of little cafes and I highly recommend Cafeteria Nomos. The museum itself has wonderful exhibits from natural history to pre-columbian sculptures to coffee growing. Well-lighted, with signs in English and Spanish.

Easy to visit and see all in 2 hours. Good way to understand the country you are now visiting. For 2 adults was $22 USD and not crowded at all and sits inside an old military fort.

The building and its history was worth the admission. I enjoyed the well laid out displays and there was lots of opportunity to sit and relax around the building and in the garden. The butterfly garden was an extra and enjoyable.

We visited here during our stay in San Jose and enjoyed the museum. There were a number of different types of displays and you got a pretty good sense of the early history of the country as well as how the country has changed over the years. The displays are well-labeled and easily accessible. The butterfly garden was also a nice feature. This museum is also very close to the Jade Museum, making it possible to see two things at one stop. I would recommend checking this out when you visit San Jose.
