Moderately difficult hike with a breathtaking view at the end!
This was an amazing experience. We ended up with a guide on the way to the falls (he found us and started helping). My knees are not the best, so he was very helpful in finding the easiest route. We only did the lower falls, it was gorgeous. Our guide ended up doing entertainment for all the folks who were there! Thank you Lorenzo. We are mid 60's so anyone reading, don't worry, you can do it, and enjoy the view at the end.

    Luck & Crazy Carlos
What an unexpected surprise. We went with not agenda and found Crazy Carlos who immediately became our tour guide. Not only did he guide us to the falls but he also showed us Cabuya Cemetery and a great place for lunch. He took tons of pictures for us along the way and was just a great host. We were even able to find fresh mango fallen right off the tree!

CRAZY CARLOS is the BEST!! + beautiful waterfall
CRAZY CARLOS is the BEST!!! I showed up to the waterfall without a tour planned and he offered to help me because it is more safe with a tour guide. He was so helpful when I was crossing the river and made sure I was safe the whole time, and offered to take so many great photos and videos. He had great energy and was so friendly. The waterfall is great! Highly recommend going!

    Crazy Carlos at Montezuma Falls
If you want to see Montezuma Falls, go with Crazy Carlos ! He is the best tour guide and knows the safest ways to get there. He will take care of your group like no other. From taking photos, to the history of the area, he does it all. We just happened to meet him in the parking lot and had the best day because of it. Carlos, if you read this, me and Sonya really wish we could have ran into you again. Thanks for everything !

Great spot before it fills up in the afternoon
Went there first thing in the morning, we were the only ones there. Really cool spot I absolutely loved it. Some garbage along the way was unfortunate to see. Wasn’t the hardest hike but also need to be careful. I managed in flip flops but don’t recommend!

Crazy Carlos and hike to Montezuma Falls.
We met Crazy Carlos at the entrance of the hike to the falls. My wife and I are 65 and 67, and he helped find the safest route in and back out again. He is crazy, but not stupid (his words), full of stories and we had a great time, except for sore muscles and aching feet. Great experience. Choose crazy, chose Carlos!

    Crazy Carlos The Scammer
We were reading the sign that gave directions to the falls when Crazy Carlos walked up to us. The sign said Falls are Free!!! Carlos said he was heading to the falls anyway and we stated that we didn’t need a guide. He insisted on showing us the way. He had us put our shoes in his backpack when the trail became slippery and wanted us to go in bare feet. Once there he coaxed me to follow him in the water over to the rocks beside the falls. He climbed up about 4 meters and I followed. We jumped together into the water. There were lots of people arriving when we left. Another group of girls were heading out so they followed along. Got to the parking lot and Carlos started whispering about the costs the tour companies charge $45. US per person. He said to us that we could help him out with a discount donation of $35. US each. He was convincing that he and his family really needed the help as he came from Nicaragua originally and poor. At the end of it all we paid for a taxi (with Carlos along) for a short ride up the hill to the Butterfly and brewery restaurant. We bought his lunch and his 2 tequilas then gave him the $70. that he was pleading for. Total Scammer!!!!! A local tour operator told us that they didn’t go to the Falls and it is Free. Please beware of friendly “Crazy Carlos”.

It's a treacherous and very risky path to the falls. If you ask my opinion, it's not worth the risky path and struggle for what you see: merely a 30m waterfall. Then if you're fool enough to go up to the other 2 waterfalls, you have wasted a lot of time on hardly anything to see.

Not super crowded when I went which was nice (it was a weekday) but I know it's a popular attraction not too far from the city center of Montezuma

Great for a morning or afternoon swim. Good first day but after heavy rain it was best avoided as too powerful! Bit of a climb up so wear good wet shoes.

We did a lot of research about this and the hotels and others said it was a "20 minute walk" but this is a serious hike. Perhaps because of the season, I don't know for sure, but it was incredibly slippery, wet, muddy, and became absolutely treacherous getting to the second waterfall. There are no signs and the paths are not obvious. We really almost got lost in there, and it was very scary. You absolutely must have a water-proof pack and shoes, not sandals, but it must be taken seriously -- do not go in thinking this is just a little hike, it's not.
