CRAZY CARLOS is the BEST!! + beautiful waterfall
CRAZY CARLOS is the BEST!!! I showed up to the waterfall without a tour planned and he offered to help me because it is more safe with a tour guide. He was so helpful when I was crossing the river and made sure I was safe the whole time, and offered to take so many great photos and videos. He had great energy and was so friendly. The waterfall is great! Highly recommend going!

    Crazy Carlos at Montezuma Falls
If you want to see Montezuma Falls, go with Crazy Carlos ! He is the best tour guide and knows the safest ways to get there. He will take care of your group like no other. From taking photos, to the history of the area, he does it all. We just happened to meet him in the parking lot and had the best day because of it. Carlos, if you read this, me and Sonya really wish we could have ran into you again. Thanks for everything !

Great spot before it fills up in the afternoon
Went there first thing in the morning, we were the only ones there. Really cool spot I absolutely loved it. Some garbage along the way was unfortunate to see. Wasn’t the hardest hike but also need to be careful. I managed in flip flops but don’t recommend!

Crazy Carlos and hike to Montezuma Falls.
We met Crazy Carlos at the entrance of the hike to the falls. My wife and I are 65 and 67, and he helped find the safest route in and back out again. He is crazy, but not stupid (his words), full of stories and we had a great time, except for sore muscles and aching feet. Great experience. Choose crazy, chose Carlos!

    Crazy Carlos The Scammer
We were reading the sign that gave directions to the falls when Crazy Carlos walked up to us. The sign said Falls are Free!!! Carlos said he was heading to the falls anyway and we stated that we didn’t need a guide. He insisted on showing us the way. He had us put our shoes in his backpack when the trail became slippery and wanted us to go in bare feet. Once there he coaxed me to follow him in the water over to the rocks beside the falls. He climbed up about 4 meters and I followed. We jumped together into the water. There were lots of people arriving when we left. Another group of girls were heading out so they followed along. Got to the parking lot and Carlos started whispering about the costs the tour companies charge $45. US per person. He said to us that we could help him out with a discount donation of $35. US each. He was convincing that he and his family really needed the help as he came from Nicaragua originally and poor. At the end of it all we paid for a taxi (with Carlos along) for a short ride up the hill to the Butterfly and brewery restaurant. We bought his lunch and his 2 tequilas then gave him the $70. that he was pleading for. Total Scammer!!!!! A local tour operator told us that they didn’t go to the Falls and it is Free. Please beware of friendly “Crazy Carlos”.

Crazy Carlos and The Butterfy Brewing Company = a great way to see the falls and grab a bite and have a drink!
We didn’t book a tour, but met Crazy Carlos at the trailhead and he offered to show us the best way to see the top of the falls. 10/10 experience! We got to spend time swimming and jumping in one of the upper pools. He took video and pictures for us and when we were done, showed us his second home, The Butterfly Brewing Company where we had lunch. Food and atmosphere 10/10. My wife and I had a great day with Crazy Carlos and we are looking forward to bringing more family back to take this tour. 👍🏼 🇨🇷

    Beautiful find
Fun, beautiful and free (except for $4.00 parking). It’s about a 20 minute hike to get there. Wear good footwear. And you should plan on having to go up and down lots of steps. So if you have bad knees or bad ankles, I would not recommend it. But if you were in relatively decent shape and have good feet, then it’s not terribly difficult to get to.

We parked at the free parking area and hiked to lower falls. Not sure if it’s because of rain, but it was a bit more difficult hike than advertised. We went with four kids (12, 10, 6, 4) and I had to carry the four year old for almost all of it. We are fit and good hikers. The beginning starts with a river crossing so plan to get your feet submerged. The trail is not marked and we went early and couldn’t quite figure out where to cross the river until Crazy Carlos came through. He adopted us and carried my 12 year old across the river since he had stitches that couldn’t get wet. Carlos was amazing and we ended up paying him as if we had reservations. Had I known, would be worth it to have help with kids. If you have young kids or less abled people, definitely hire him. I’d do it anyways just because I like supporting amazing locals and you never know when it might come in handy! He was super patient, kind and helpful.

We swam in the pool and jumped off the rock. Super fun. Kids loved it. Worth the hike.

For the stressful effort to get there, its only 30 metres of falls, I recommend you skip it and see something better. Because the other 2, upper falls are even more effort to climb and see with even much less water flowing. Big dud!

WARNING:
Watch for an older man: gray and black hair. Thin, wears sunglasses, wears cap, maybe blue Hurley shirt and says his name is Alberto.

He'll approach you and says he's a guide, also claims he's a long time resident of Montezuma. Especially if he sees you having difficulty on the trail. He says, "Whoa, whoa, I can show you the easier path, assist you,..." Then you ask "How much?" He says, "Whatever you like, I'm here to help; assist...I don't ask, your choice."

He will take you there to the first falls, tells you relax, take a rest. Even take photos of you with your phone/camera. Take you back across. You offer him what you think it's worth: č̣5,000 colones. He complains: "Ahh, not enough.." "č̣15,000 colones" And he'll snatch it right out of your wallet! You're left high and dry and broke! This bandit scams you of your hard earned cash and he runs off.

Be alert, and avoid this constantly spitting (it's like, what's going on, you got flack in the throat?), ripoff, with his little black dog - LIKE THE PLAGUE!

This hike was a short walk from our hotel in Montezuma. The trail was very poorly marked. We didn’t realize until the way back that there were orange markers to follow. The waterfall was ok, nothing majestic. This is an activity to do if you have extra time to spare.

It's a treacherous and very risky path to the falls. If you ask my opinion, it's not worth the risky path and struggle for what you see: merely a 30m waterfall. Then if you're fool enough to go up to the other 2 waterfalls, you have wasted a lot of time on hardly anything to see.

Not super crowded when I went which was nice (it was a weekday) but I know it's a popular attraction not too far from the city center of Montezuma

Great for a morning or afternoon swim. Good first day but after heavy rain it was best avoided as too powerful! Bit of a climb up so wear good wet shoes.
