This is a small private reserve close to the more popular and larger Monteverde reserve. Like everything else in Costa Rica, the entrance fee ($15 per person for unguided stroll) is a bit expensive but, cost aside, it is a nice way to spend some...More

We went with a private guide, who was very knowledgeable. We saw some nice wildlife, but seeing the resplendent Quetzel was a highlight. It was very rainy and chilly, but it was still enjoyable. At the gift shop/coffee shop they have several hummingbird feeders. So...More

We went to this private reserve as part of a tour and had a very nice walk through the forest. The path is mostly groomed and easy to navigate. We saw a coati ambling up one of the paths.

Our ticket included seeing a brief video with an overview of the area, then we met up for a small ranger led guided hike through the cloud forest. (There were seven visitors to our one guide.) The advantage is that Mario, our guide, had the...More

Don't miss this if you are in the area. Birds , plants, insects and everything you can imagine in a cloud forest. Fantastic place and if you are lucky , maybe a glimpse of the extraordinary Resplendant Quetzal

Perhaps I expected more of a wild jungle, crawling with wildlife, but the guided walk was enjoyable rather than mind blowing. I wish I had chosen the volcano / tropical rainforest / treetop tours elsewhere in Costa Rica. Most hummingbirds were to be found at...More

The Monteverde Reserve is full of wildlife to see, but it can be difficult to see the animals without a guide to help you spot them. The day we went we saw mostly birds, and the guide was able to spot them based on their...More

We did a self guided hike. Didn't see any great wildlife like we did on so many other hikes in CR. Could have been the afternoon timing. Better in mornings most likely. Hike is nice though. Maybe a guide would be worth it

Yes, there are maps of the preserve that let you walk on your own thru it, but after paying $20 pp it makes sense to get the most out of being there, and our guide, Esteban, certainly made that clear! Thanks to him we learned...More

I guess we were lucky. Had a very good guide who clearly enjoyed what he did. Lots of explanations, lots of time spent talking. We're lucky too see some great birds and the explanations about the vegetation was enlightening. I think you need a guide...More

I'm really scared of heights and I managed. There are holes, so it's see through. It doesn't move, unless others are on there moving. It's easily possible to avoid going over it, if you so choose.
