A lovely beach (not a lot of sand, though) directly opposite the town. There's some wonderful views to the north and out to sea and the water looked inviting. It's noisy here, but colorful and vibrant. Worth a visit.

The sand is great, there are plenty of bars and restaurants along the beach. I wonder a little about water quality as I am not sure of the sewage capacity in the area.

We took a few walks along the paths here and spotted 5 Sloths in short succession only a few metres from each other in separate trees. They are difficult to spot at first but once you've been trekking around the National Parks and know what...More

If you visit Costa Rica and don't like the prison hotels high in the sky; then try Puerto Viejo. Where everyone from all over the world come to together. Beautiful beaches all around. Lots to do in the rain forest. Good little honest restaurants. No...More

Small town on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica with a wide selection of restaurants, stores, etc. Minutes away from playa Negra and playa cocles.

When planning our Costa Rica trip, we were surprised at so many varieties of places to stay-rainforest, volcano, beach, city?!! In the end we opted to go to Puerto Viejo and are so very glad we did. The Caribbean side of Costa Rica is laid...More

Small surf town and beach. With one of the best surf waves, salsa brava is in front. Nice place to stay.

One of the most beautiful beaches I've been to in my life. Saw a sloth in the tree above us during the daytime. Make sure you're okay with a couple stray dogs coming up to you, though.

Beautiful, quiet beach surrounded by the greenery of the rainforest yet within easy walk of the town for cafes, restaurants and shops.

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
Hi - just starting my research into staying (probably) in Puerto Viejo for about a week-10 days, after touring Costa Rica for about a week. We are looking to stay beachfront at a nice swimmable beach, but I have found various ideas of what people think nice beaches "are" - obviously - I don't waves outside my door, I want to be able to go into calm water and swim every day. Thoughts please and thank you? We picked Puerto Viejo because of the vibe of the town and to be close to it each evening. I think Cahuita may be too small, plus from what I'm reading the beaches there aren't as calm? Would love any thoughts, thanks so much!

I am taking the bus to Puerto Viejo from San Jose. I am staying at The Lotus Garden and the only address indicated is - across from Salsa Brava. How far is this from the bus station? Can I walk, if so, in what direction or take taxi/local bus, if any. What is Salsa Brava? Thanks in advance.
