My boyfriend and I were staying in nearby Punta Islita, but found the beach there to be very volcanic and rugged with silt-filled water. We took about a 30 minute drive north (due to bad roads, not the distance) and found Puerto Carillo! The beach is beautiful! Long crescent beach - easy to walk the whole thing. Lighter sand (but still hot!), and clearer water. There are some good waves here if you like to boogie board. It wasn't too hard to get in past the break, but you need to be careful or you could get pummeled. I'd classify the water as warm.

Due to the lack of amenities, it was not overly crowded. Personally, I find that to be a good thing. No bathrooms. No restaurants. No shower/rinse facilities. There are a couple of vendors set up along the street selling coconut water, shaved ice, and a guy renting beach chairs/umbrellas. We paid $10 for two beach loungers and an umbrella and it was (necessary) heaven. There are some palms along the road that you can escape to if you don't feel like springing for man-made shade. Just be sure to bring everything else you need for a day at the beach along with you (towels, books, sunscreen, food, water, etc.) because you won't find it there!

The beach is beautiful and there were wild Scarlet Macaws eating almonds in the trees along the boulevard. Wonderful.

Stayed in a complex in Playa Carillo for a week . Not much to do there if you do not indulge in water sports but we did find a few things to keep ourselves occupied . The beach is long and quite empty considering we visited in high season and was a nice way to walk and experience the sea without having to go in . It is definately a beach holiday rather than a activity one . We did enjoy ourselves as it was too hot to want to do a lot . There are enough restaurants in the vicinity as well not to get bored and the food seems vey good in most of them .

Incredible beach and surroundings! Light colored-sand, small waver and an immense beauty as the beach has a lot of palm trees that make it fresh and natural. There are no hotels or houses which is a plus as you will not find large crowds of people.

Visited this beach fir a day on our trip to Costa Rica. Free easy parking along side the beach. Sandy and small waves made it child friendly. Blazing sun but coconut trees along the beach offered much needed shade. The water is very warm. Thinking 80 degrees as a guess. Many people pedaling buy with refreshing coconut water or frozen ice. So refreshing. You can rent cabanas I heard for 20 dollars a day. I did see people renting just chairs but I don’t know the cost.

Spent the afternoon here... nice and quiet. Flew the drone and got ariel shots. Bought chilled coconuts from a vendor for 1000 colones each. Delicious! Will go back with our snorkel gear for sure!

The beach a Playa Carillo is absolutely amazing. It is 10 minutes south of Samara and when you come upon it as you drive down the road, you will say "Oh my". When you park and walk out onto the almost deserted beach, you are blown away by the beauty. The waves are big , but the undertow is not as bad as at Playa Samara. Could play there all day.

We went in low season, and on a few of the days, we were one of a handful of people on the beach...what a treat. Took our cooler, beach umbrella, and towels and lazed the days away. The water is nice, not too many waves when we were there. I like my ocean flat like a swimming pool and I felt comfortable enough to go in the water. The sand at this
beach is one of the nicest we have experienced in Costa Rica. There is plenty of free parking along the road, just be careful if you park in the shade, you are not under a coconut tree!!!!!
There are no restaurants or facilities out here, so come prepared. On the weekends, there are vendors that sell cold pipas and shaved ice.
Even though we stayed in Samara, I made my husband drive to Playa Carrillo everyday. If you are looking for crowds and bars you won't find it here. If you want a beautiful, quiet, secluded beach, you can't go wrong with Playa Carrillo.
