Lovely volcano crater with short walk

Nice view after a short walk from the visitor center. Make sure to go early as the clouds tend to come in and it will be impossible to see in the afternoon if that happens... read more

Nice view after a short walk from the visitor center. Make sure to go early as the clouds tend to come in and it will be impossible to see in the afternoon if that happens. There is another hike in the area to the other lake but it is a strenuouse hike up and down. You can smell the sulfur... More

If you ever have the pleasure to visit Costa Rica I recommend visiting Poas (one of the many volcanoes in this beautiful country). The drive up to the top of the volcanoes is filled with beautiful views of coffee plantations, farmland, and vistas overlooking San Jose. The short hike to the volcanoes crater is lined with lush foliage and easy... More

With a small hike 30 minutes round trip is possible to admire a nice caldera and have amazing pictures. It is on the road from san jose to arenal at 1 hour from san jose.

Well, it was the rainy season, so we only saw a bit of the crater as the wind shifted the fog around a bit. Nice walk thru the rainforest.

When we arrived (8.20 AM) at the entrance we were told that the crater was completely covered in clouds and the chance to clear up was 50/50. So she gave us the choice to pay the 15$ entrance fee or turn around and leave without entering the park. We waited for about 10 minutes when it started to clear up... More

I took the chance and went in the rainy season. I was hoping by some strike of luck it'd be clear. It was not. However I walked the trails with my wife and still had a great time. Walked the Laguna Botos trail and saw a decent amount of birds. It cost $15USD to get in and then another $3USD... More

The ride to the top of the volcano is very scenic and you get to see the countryside. In San Jose it was in the upper 20s C but at the top of the volcano it was around 15 C so may want to bring a light jacket and not wear shorts. Once parked it was a short 10 min... More

Was a very good volcano up in the mountains with a great view of the volcano. Be careful of when the park closes as they will kick you out like they did to us :(

Having over 100 volcanoes and around 7 active, it was hard to pick which one to visit. We picked Poas as it was one of the active and it was an easy drive from San Jose. We coupled this with a visit to the La Paz falls and it made for a great day. If you go, understand that there... More

We went here real early on Sunday morning. We had a clear sky just 20 km away from the top but by the time we reached the top it was cloudy, rainy and windy. The guy at the booth told us there was nothing to see and he thought there was a small chance of seeing anything that day. We... More
