Agua Trails is a tour operator located in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. Under the name of Crossing Border Tours, Agua Trails organizes day tours, shuttles and multi-day packages to southern Nicaragua trying to invigorate the relatively unknown route to San Carlos and the San Juan river.

Travelling from La Fortuna to the border with Nicaragua only takes a little over 3 hours and border formalities generally don't take too long as it is a small, friendly border passage. During the boat ride over the Rio Frio to San Carlos, Nicaragua, a variety of animals can be seen, including monkeys, caimans, river turtles and many bird species.

Thank you for your review, first of all I am very sorry for what happened on the bus from Los Chiles to La Fortuna with the other traveler that upset both you and your daughter, quite unpleasant indeed after a long day of traveling but this is what happens sometimes when traveling with an international group on a seat-in tour.... We mainly used public transport, but for these first few days we decied to take it easy going to Sabalos Lodge (close to El Castillo) via La Fortuna. invaluable help in getting on a Sunday across the border from La Fortuna to El Castillo Nicaragua. I don't think we'd have made it on our own using public transport. Marjiory picked us up in Nicaragua and steered us onto the right boat and gave us loads of useful info. Also, a total bonus - stopped at a whole bridgeful... More

As part of our independent travels we needed to make a return trip from Costa Rica to Nicaragua. On the way out of Costa Rica we planned to transfer from La Fortuna to Sablos Lodge on the San Juan river and on the way back from San Carlos to La Fortuna following a flight from Managua. Anticipating the logistics for... More

We did our 2nd border run to Nicaragua using Aqua trails. Both times it has been a very good experience. We did not take the boat route but instead drove to the border and crossed. We went on another bus to San Carlos. Once there we had lunch and returned to La Fortuna. It is a day trip but a... More

This is the second tour we've taken with Polle, and Agua Trails. We came back to CR with the kids this year, and wanted to give them the chance to see Nicaragua, stamp their passports :) Polle is a great tour guide. We took the Nicaragua Shuttle, a day trip to San Carlos, Nicaragua. The bus picks you up at... More

What a relaxed and scenic border crossing! Unfortunately our schedule didn’t match with the days that Agua Trails operates their regular tour, but they arranged a very good alternative for us on a Tuesday: we were picked up in La Fortuna by the shuttle bus from Aventuras Arenal for the Caño Negro Tour and they dropped us right in front... I was very impressed with the services offered by Agua Trails. I was nearing the end of my 90 day stay in Costa Rica, and contacted Agua Trails to enquire about this particular trip. I had done the trip before on my own, and found that doing it this time with Agua Trails was so much easier and more convenient.... More
