Drove 40 minutes because all their materials said you could make reservations at the desk. When we got there, the front gate was closed, nobody answered their little call box and they didn't answer the phone when we called. We were looking forward to our visit based on everyone else's recommendations but couldn't even get on property to find the reception desk and make a reservation. It was a nice drive through the small towns and countryside but other than that, a wasted half day.

The trails are very well cared for and well layed out. The guide was very knowledgeable and made sure we all had time to check the spotting scope. He assisted us with bird identification and helped us see both a male a female quetzel. wow!

Hi diane154992,
Seems you were visiting the Arenal Volcano area and not exactly our wildlife rescue center. Maybe you want to find the experience provider.

Proyecto Asis does incredible work, I can't recommend it highly enough! It's a must visit!
My 11-year-old daughter and I spent 2 weeks volunteering at Proyecto Asis, and we LOVED every minute of it! From the welcoming homestay with our lovely host Abuela (who was an incredible cook and a gracious host), to the daily volunteer/learning opportunities with the super friendly staff at Proyecto, to the personally sculped extracurricular activites created for us; every part of the experience was incredibly enriching! Through hands on activites (some of which included preparing food and enrichment activites for the animals) we learned the importance of keeping wildlife in the wild. Proyecto Asis is truly an inspirational wildlife rescue center, that cares deeply for all animals and believes in giving back to the local community. It's definitely worth a visit...the longer the better!

Hola, Steph, and Adelle!
We have no words to thank you for trusting our organization for your Volunteer Program. You had the opportunity of doing extra activities here that gave you a better point of view on why we always insist on keeping these species in their natural habitat.
Sharing with a host family from the community where we are located is also a way to experience Costa Rican hospitality.
Thank you for leaving us to be part of your experiences and life! You are more than welcome to come back.

We did this tour and at first I was a little bored, it felt like a zoo experience. Then we prepped the food and fed them animals and that was great.
It wasn't until we did a safari later that day and saw other animals on our trip that I realized how much we learned with Johnny and how great it was we got to see the animals up close as most of the animals we say in the wild were much farther away.
I would recommend this and do the volunteer part- it was fun making the food.

This was a brilliant, relaxing and educational tour of their animal sanctuary. We learned all about how they rehabilitate the animals that come to them, and why some that have been raised as pets cannot be rehabilitated. A really engaging presentation style which was pitched just right for adults and children.
I don't think they are big enough to accept coach tours, so this tour is with just a few people, so no crowding to see the animals. Lovely gardens too. Paths are level with loose stone - so mostly suitable for wheelchairs and baby buggies, except the odd patch where stone is deeper/looser.
A really lovely trip. Although it seems expensive I think overall it was good value compared to other tours, plus it is supporting a great project

Hi Radiohead319!
More than rehabilitating animals, we want to prevent more of them from coming here because of similar circumstances. Because illegal wildlife trade is a huge issue, we also want to let our visitors know about it.
We like activities more personalized for our visitors. For that reason, our groups are small.
Many thanks for coming and supporting our Sanctuary!

What a great place, doing great work, by really great and wonderful people! We did the tour + volunteering and it was a truly special experience that we will always remember. Carlos's passion for the animals is infectious. Considering the week long volunteering option on our next visit.

We had a great time at Proyecto Asis. The guide was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable, sharing about the important work of the sanctuary. We also did the volunteer activity where you prepare food for the animals and then watch them eat. Super fun!

Great place to see animals up close in a rehab centre rather than a zoo. The work they do is wonderful and the guiding was so informative and fun. Mostly they had toucans, macaws, monkeys, parakeets. But every day this could change although the rehab of some animals takes years. Sadly many are there because they were illegal pets and some are therefore not indigenous.

What an amazing experience. The grounds are beautiful and staff is amazing. Proyecto Asis mission is to rehabilitate and release animals back to the wild whenever possible. They provide expert care and work hard to educate those that come to see their facility. They don’t believe in handling the animals as they want to release them to the wild whenever possible. Their tour consisted of seeing macaws, monkeys, parrots, coatis etc in their enclosures and educating on what the animal was and what the approach is to evaluating health and readying/preparing to be released. There are of course animals that cannot be released due to age, injury, etc and they do an amazing job of providing a happy comfortable and enriching home for the remainder of the animal‘s life. We also participated in preparing food and enrichment toys for some of the animals. Again, an opportunity to see how they manage care and ensure stimulation to the animals during their recovery. We learned so much from our guide Carlos and would highly recommend a visit to this facility.

Hi Meg K!
Thank you for your review. Unfortunately, all the animals you saw in the Sanctuary area won't be released. Those are the ones that are helping us with environmental education.
If an animal needs medical care, we will never show it to people. That way, we avoid stress on the animal.
We are glad to know you learned many things from Carlos.

The Sanctuary tour with volunteer session was AMAZING!
Our guide, Carlos, was so knowledgeable, entertaining and friendly. It was great to hear how passionate he was about what he did. He explained how he’d research topics to get a better understanding and that was exciting to hear.
It was a huge educational experience for me, as alot of what I thought I knew, was not accurate.
I would highly recommend this program and encourage everyone to visit.

What is the best way to get to Proyecto Asis from La Fortuna? I will not have a car, but I assume I will be able to arrange taxis to and from my Airbnb?

Bonsoir,

Why type of interaction do you get with the animals during the wildlife and volunteering tour? Looking to get involved and would like to know how involved you actually get. I’ve heard nothing but excellent things about this sanctuary and would like to know a little more before we make the journey there.

I think it might depend on what animals are present when you visit. But if my memory is correct, the animals that are able to be rehabilitated & returned to the wild will not have any ( unnecessary) human interaction. The others, that cannot be rehabilitated, have minimal human contact because they are trying to provide the most natural habitat as possible for them. Having said that- we were able to have brief contact at the end of the day with some small monkeys... they took pieces of fruit from our hands...Great fun! We really enjoyed our time here!

We are staying at the Springs resort that I believe also has an animal sanctuary. Would this experience be different or somewhat the same? Your reviews are amazing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Written 16 April 2019
Hi dear jennsw1237,
I must tell you the situation and experience is quite different; however, if you are only interested in seeing animals the place can be good. Our tour is more focused on education about wildlife. You can find out more checking reviews we have received.

Hello!
We will stop on our way to Arenal, probably with our luggage in the car. Is the parking safe?
Written 27 February 2019
Yes. The place is somewhat secluded. The parking area is right by the main entrance and is visible to the receptionist. There's no one wandering around the area who doesn't belong to the place.

Hola! me gustaria saber si realmente es un lugar de rehabilitacion o si es mas similar a un zoologico, amo a los animales y no me gustaria asistir a un lugar q se asemeja a un zoologico, graicas
Written 22 April 2018
Hi,
There are several facts that makes us different from a zoo. All the animals that we care for are here because they needed help. We do our best to release as many of those in need as possible, but it is not always possible. The tours mention the situations of the animals and why they stay or why they go back. We also talk about conservation and prevention topics related to wildlife. You can find more info on facebook.
