Neighbourhood: People’s Square
People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers. Shanghai residents, meanwhile, live and work in the many residential and office high-rises. While much of Shanghai stays busy late into the night, this really is an area that never sleeps with glitzy nightclubs keeping people up until the wee hours of the morning.

The 4-story building cannot be missed if you walk along Fuzhou Road with big words painted on the side of the building '上海书城‘ which means Shanghai Book City.

You can possibly find every book you ever wanted, in mandarin of course.

Only drawback is that the place is huge and you would need to seek the help of the information desk on Level 1 to find the book you need. However, if they are unhelpful (sometimes they are), just insist you cannot find the book and they will have to obliged.

Tip: Good to know the title and author of the book in mandarin. Write it down on a piece of paper before coming to this store. If you are looking for English books, go to the Foreign Language Bookstore opposite the road.

This book centre has numerous books in its seven floors but all of them are in simplified Chinese. If you don't know this language then don't come here.

Shanghai book store is huge with a large collection of Chinese books for all levels. The place is very big and has 7 floors filled with different type of books properly categorized. It was not crowded when we were there on Wednesday and hence, the place is quiet. You can also enjoy a cuppa at the Starbucks located on the second floor. However, not much selection on stationery which maybe a let down if you are looking for cutely designed pens and pencils like those sold in Japanese and Korean bookstores.

Looking for books on Shanghai or Chinese Culture? interested in buying CDs on Chinese Music? This is the right place to be. Get down at Peoples Square Metro Station, parallel to Nanjing Road is Fuzhou Road. Once inside this book store enquire for English Books section, the friendly staff are glad to guide you. The collection of books and music CDs are so huge, be patient, plan enough time and get the book / CD you wished to buy in Shanghai. Fuzhou Road is the place you can also buy paint brushes and special papers, if you are interested in calligraphy or painting.

It is an impressive 7th floor bookstore on Fuzhou road that has a big variety of books, therefore it is considered a book Paradise for Chinese people and it is very crowded. There are signs that will guide you (both in English and Chinese) to the sector you are looking for but unfortunately the variety of foreign language books is indeed limited. However, for a shop dedicated to Foreign Languages Books (exclusively) the interested ones can walk a couple of hundred meters east (on Fuzhou road No 390) where they can find the shop "Shanghai Foreign Language Bookstore".

This is a big bookstore. Seven floors of books.... unfortunately just one corner, less than a quarter of one floor (7th floor) of English books.
If you read Chinese there's loads of books. I don't often go to a book shop and come out empty handed and I didn't. I picked up a couple of books though I wish there were a few more English books.

I was simply amazed at the shear number of titles this incredible institution carries! I was thrilled to find the translation of my book LETTERS TO A YOUNG ARCHITECT there, and that too on a shelf for best selling books! The staff was very patient and helpful at every moment! I also enjoyed seeing the special arrangements for children! WOW! What a place!

This is an impressive bookstore. Non Chinese should look elsewhere. Seven floors and side shops fill this massive place. This is definitely a place to go if you are curious about a brick and wall bookstore functioning very successfully.

The Shanghai Book City is renown for its seven storeys of books and merchandize. However, I found in my recent trip that it is even more interesting, personally, to go into the many shops surrounding the Book City. These shops sell not only books but all the materials for Chinese calligraphy and painting. The variety of shops gives me a more pleasant experience than just being confined to one building.
