This is my first visit in this spa. I know this area very well. But never knew that they have such a beautiful spa for the whole family. It's Sunday in Shanghai. Spa is full with family and children. Little bit noisy may be with lots of children. But it's a huge spa, not so difficult to find quiet areas.

There are lot of services available in this spa for everybody. For adults it's a great place to relax and recharge. For children, the facility is full with all kind of activities. Toys, games, sports everything. A single visit is certainly not enough.

Gokurakuyu is open everyday from 10am in the morning to late night. They close the door at 2am. Price is very reasonable. Less than RMB 200 per visit (USD 25). Different price for kids. Little bit cheaper. Food price is average. But not cheap. There is only one Japanese Restaurant in this spa. More options will make the spa much better.

Truely, I am looking forward to my next visit and write again with more details about Gokurakuyu.

It's just a short visit in Shanghai for me and my friend, after Wuxi and before Beijing. As we already visited Shanghai few times and already visited almost all the Tourist Attractions, so we are looking for a new experience / things to do this time. We found this place in Trip Advisor, and after reading the good reviews, we decided to give it a try.

We used Baidu map to locate the place, and used buses to come here, pretty easy to find it as it's a very big building located in the side of a big road. The complex are huge, very modern and clean, Japanese style, the staffs are so friendly, and there's a guy speaks good English. Entrance is RMB 128/adult. We need to put our shoes in a locker, and changed into a traditional clothes, then went inside the same sex bathrooms. They have various baths with various temperature which you could try. There's also a steam room, massage / scrubbing room, shower room, toilets, and make up room. At first I felt quite awkward to see so many people naked. It's my first time to come at this kind of hot spring spa. But after few minutes and few baths, I don't care any more. Because it's so comfortable! I only spent total of 1.5hrs here as I couldn't really stand the heat. Then I went upstairs.

In the 2nd floor there's a huge food court with restaurants (the food is delicious, a little bit expensive), children playground, common room, and saunas. In the 3rd floor, there's a massage room also a bigger common room. In the 4th floor, it's VIP rooms. Too bad we don't have much time, otherwise we would love to try the sauna / massage or just spent longer time in the common room, so cozy.

Overall, it was a very nice experience and money well spent. Can't wait to go there again if we visit Shanghai again soon!! XD

My friend brought me here after he went once before and really enjoyed it. As I had never been to a bathhouse before, I was a little hesitant, but it was a great experience. The most notable thing about it is how clean it is. There's nothing I can't stand more than a wet, filthy place. Considering all the people that were there, the hot springs, stone saunas, and other lounging areas were all incredibly well-kept. I had been to another bathhouse in China after this experience, and it was nowhere near as clean as this one, even though the admission price is similar. My friend and I ended up spending a whole afternoon in the pools and saunas at Gokurakuyu and then later on relaxing and reading a book on one of their comfy sofas. Before we left, we also ate some Japanese cuisine in their restaurant area right above the communal space. I would highly recommend this bathhouse for a nice, relaxing day.

This is a visually nice spa but there is no enforcement of proper hygienic practice. It is obvious knowledge that one should fully cleanse the body before entering the hot tubs. However, most of the clientele that visit this spa do not clean their body, and Immediately enter the tub with the uncleaned “privates”. Further, the clientele regularly spit on the bath floor. The management of this spa should enforce the appropriate behaviour with fines. This would encourage guests to follow rules and be accountable for their behaviour.

First off, don't know if you could get your teenage kid into this. EVERYONE is naked. However...great experience. Loved how silky my skin felt after the salt rub. Large pools of warmer to hot water. Some have jets that massage your achy muscles. Some have herbs (?) in them that supposedly have rejuvenating healing properties. Also about 7 or 8 dry saunas, again with various stones that promote health. Only one negative about these is that a couple of people were talking in one and then in another someone was watching a show on their cell phone. Would be better if they monitored that to keep it quiet in these rooms for proper relaxation. Also, outside of these saunas are heated floors with pillows strewn about where they could go to do this activity. Pajama like outfits are provided for the saunas as this part of the bath house is both male and female. Large cafeteria with great healthy reasonably priced food. Towels, toothbrushes, combs, blowdryers are all provided. All in all we spent 5-6 hours there. Could have stayed longer. Felt like a ball of mush afterwards...soooo relaxed!

Awesome place. Very similar to a Korean style spa. Great wet area with lots of different pools, even an outside area with rotenburo (big barrels filled with mineral water that you climb in). There are probably 8 or more different types of saunas, all with different temperatures, and an ice room to cool down in. Massages are a little on the pricey side. No English spoken, but easy enough to figure everything out. Highly recommend it if you want to experience a true Asian spa experience.

This is a newish huge baths complex out in Pudong New Area, not too far away. take metro on line 6 to the stop before boxing road, then get a taxi (15y) or moto taxi (10y if you haggle). Or a 20 min walk.

Spotless, well organised in a strange oriental way - walk in, hand over your shoes for a token, hand that in for a wristband and a different token. Hand that in for pyjamas, and then go into change. Then walk naked into the bathing area, enjoy the baths - six different ones in the men's area, plus two saunas, outdoor area and many showers. Scrubs available for 68y. Everyone is naked in the single sex baths, all ages from 3 to 90, no one cares what you look like, even if a pale westerner like me. I recommend going from the 41degree bath to the 17 degree one a few times... After a while your sense of hot and cold fades, and you feel invigorated and healthy. Then dry off, put the PJs on and go through into the common areas, also huge. There is a cafe, lots of seating to relax, watch TV, further saunas, a library, games rooms, and an excellent restaurant. Heaven. There's wifi too, and no time limit on your visit although they close at midnight I think. You can go back and forth to the baths as many times as you like.

If you like wellness, spa and japanese bath you have to go there. It's a fantastic place, quite new (opened 2013 I think) with everything you can dream of. Like all japanese baths it's seperates between men and women. You'll find a variety of five different pools, saunas and a lot(!) of relaxation places. Comfort seats, mangas, drinks, television. Everything is clean, the atmosphere really friendly and the prices low. They have special facilities for wellness and a big menu for massages. Even the restaurant offers great (japanese) food for a reasonable price. If you ever consider having a relaxed day in Shanghai, this is the place to go.
How to get there: Take the "9"-Metro-line to "Middle Yanggao Road" (final stop). From there take a taxi. It'll cost you only about three Euros.

This spa is excellent, the pools were very relaxing and ranged from 38 to 40c.

If you don’t speak Chinese, someone will guide you with the check in process.

Showering is required before entering the pools. Afterwards you change to pajamas and can enjoy the rest of the facility.

Gokurakuyu is the perfect place to visit after a long flight/train ride. It’s close to Hongqiao too!

When searching the web for WHAT TO DO IN SHANGHAI, a visit to a bathhouse was recommended, which I decided to do because the Gokurakuyu Bathhouse was nearby my hotel. My expectation was to see mostly old Chinese men and perhaps a few Westerns (like me) wanting to experience something of the Chinese culture. I was very wrong in my expectation...I was the only Westerner and also one of a handful (maybe five) men over 50. Most visitors to the bath section were young guys. It also did not seem to be a real "cultural" thing in China, but rather social time with family and/ or friends. The facility is modern and large, I spent most of the time in the bath section and just went to quickly check out the rest of the facility. There are several warm baths /pools/ tubs and one cold pool as well as a big sauna (like a theater with a TV), steam room, massage/ scrubbing room, showers and an area with small stools, vanities and hand showers where you can wash and shave (complimentary shavers and cream). Close to the entrance of the bath section are basins with complimentary toothbrushes and tooth paste. I tried to experience everything and also moved from the warm baths/ tubs/ pools to the cold pool several times as well as I had a scrub. I paid 128 Yuan entry fee plus around 40 Yuan for the scrub. This was money well spent. I felt so relaxed after the visit and I had such a good night sleep that evening.
