We had a fabulous few hours with Janny Chyn away from the lights and glitz to see another side to Shanghai. Highly recommended. Janny was excellent. A real highlight was Grey Gardens / Secluded Library, as well as Janny's insider knowledge.

Our tour with Mason through the Shanghai Jewish museum & the former Jewish Ghetto was excellent. Mason had excellent English skills, was very knowledgeable and polite. The history between the Jewish people and the Chinese over many years, particularly in Shanghai, is amazing and a story we enjoyed hearing.

We spent a few days for work in Shanghai before being able to take the time to kick back, relax and discover the city! My first impression of Shanghai was that it was such a big city and lacked soul! That all changed when we met Janny on a sunny Saturday morning right outside of the Jing'an temple. That's when... More

When we travel, we usually don't have a guide and just walk around the city. So this tour was a very impulsive decision... but it is also the best desicion I could have taken, as I wanted to know the rural look of china's villages. Our tour guide was very friendly person and she very interactive. I totally recommend people... More

Our guide Joe was very good and most informative. We found about about lot of of history that we never knew about. The Chinese ambassador to Austria saved the lives of thousands of Jews by giving them permits to come to Shanghai via the sea. The whole tour lived up to our expectations and we had a great time.

Shanghai Pathways offers many cultural programs that provide a unique interactive interface with the local chinese people. Janny and Peter are perfect hosts both knowlegeable of the area and the people who live there. I was lucky enough to participate in their watercolor workshop - we learnt different styles of painting and ways to color. I can't say enough about... More

We are in Shanghai for a long weekend, and would LOVE to learn about this amazing, so we reached out for Shanghai Pathways. The Zhujiajiao Water Town tour is for our 15 years old son and his language teacher. They had a wonderful time and the guide Lisa was very nice to them and thought them a lot about Shanghai... More

I have been participated in many tours and cultural experiences in Shanghai and one day trip to Hangzhou with the tour operator/owner/guide, Janny. She is the best in Shanghai. She grew up here and has a passion and keen interest in its past, present and future. My favorite tour is "Lost and Forgotten." Each tor I have done has been... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Shanghai’s original walls live on in the curve of the streets that serve as the border to the old city. An aerial view shows a clear circular outline and parts of the original wall are preserved as monuments to the ancient past. The main tourist attraction of Yuyuan (which means Yu garden, though it is often redundantly referred to as Yuyuan Garden) draws hordes of tourists every day, but wandering the streets around the complex reveals more exciting attractions such as food and antique markets. There are also streets lined with shops peddling everyday wares such as Chinese dining ware and craft notions that can be even more enticing to visitors uninterested in the usual tourist fare.
