Shanghai's Jewish legacy and experience. A half day eye-opening tour of an extraordinary story guided since 2002 by Israeli Journalist Dvir Bar-Gal. From the media: "Bar-Gal, rich with knowledge and full of humor, takes his visitors along on a mesmerizing journey into an amazing, sweet and sour world. A world where opium dealers, old world colonialists, real estate moguls, hard working poor Chinese migrants and Jewish holocaust survivors mix. "

A friend of mine took me to Shangha from Wellington, New Zealand to specifically take this Jewish Shanghai Tour. I was blown away by what I was seeing and hearing first hand from Dvir, who was an excellent guide and so passionate about imparting/sharing with us his knowledge of what happened to the Shanghai Jews. This tour was the highlight... More

Excellent "lecture" of Shanghai history and roles of Jewish immigrants in the development of Shanghai (and Hong Kong), from Opium Wars through Communist Revolution. Not to be missed. Starts at the Fairmont Peace Hotel (Sassoon House) and includes transportation by van to "Jewish Ghetto", Jewish Museum and tenement residence. Taking this tour will be a highlight of your visit to... More

I was told to do the Jewish Tour whilst visiting Shanghai. I was traveling with my wife and two teenagers (15 and 16). We met Dvir at our hotel in the Bund. There were 6 of us in total on the tour which I understand is a small group. Dvir was friendly , courteous and very knowledgeable in his field.... More

My husband and I found this tour so interesting that we took it twice, First in 2010 and again in December, 2016. We found it equally interesting the 2nd time! Dvir gives a very interesting and insightful look at the Jewish history of Shanghai. This walking tour includes visits to areas you would probably not visit otherwise with passionate stories told by Dvir about the history of the place. Highly recommended.

Dvir is incredibly well-versed in the history of the Jews in Shanghai. He has been doing this for over a decade. If you are at all curious about the Jews who for called this city home during the 19th and 20th centuries, this is the definitive tour to take. Dvir provides a wealth of information with touch of classic Jewish/Israeli... More

This tour was alive...despite the facts that all the religious buildings and the Jews are gone (which is a bit sad). Dvir's passion alone brings this page in history to life. Kol Hakavod Dvir....don't miss this.

This is a remarkable walking tour of Shanghai. The guide, Dvir, speaks flawless English, and he has remarkable stories about not only the Jewish story of Shanghai , but also the story of Western interaction with China. He is funny and very informed, and the tour is very well done. Strongly recommend to any visitor to Shanghai!

I very much enjoyed the time I spent with Dvir (the guide of the tour). He is a great storyteller and a person who is thoroughly interested in the subject matter. I appreciated his comments and the way he organized the visit. I would highly recommend this tour.

Staying in Gubei / Hongqiao / Minhang

Neighbourhood Profile
Gubei / Hongqiao / Minhang
West of Shanghai’s better-known business, cultural and entertainment centers, lies an expansive area of residential neighborhoods peppered with lifestyle pockets that have their own unique attractions. The schools have formed pockets of international communities throughout Gubei, Hongqiao and Minhang. Quite a few entertainment and shopping centers have built up over the years to cater to these communities. While living here means you are relatively far away from Shanghai’s usual hot spots, the large parks, spacious homes and proximity to great Japanese and Korean food keep the neighborhoods popular.
