Awesomeeeeeee place for food and bits and bits and local cuisine!!! Hugeeee place to walk but really beautiful landscape. Use line 8 and stop at Pujiang Town metro station then take a bus or didi to the Ancient Town. A place one must visit!

Zhaojialou is a good place if you have access to it. I do not think it is worth to pay a fortune to get there, but if you know how to take subway, then a short bus or cab ride, it is a good place to visit with many good local foods. The place is not packed with tourists. Price of food is certainly lower compare with other places with outstanding quality. It seems most visitors are Shanghaiese.

A superb experience both driving through Shanghai, then experiencing an old world water city. The shopping at the little stores is both highly recommended and cheap, however they do not accept credit cards.

I went to Zhaojialou for an afternoon with my wife and thoroughly loved the pretty buildings and canals. There is also a pristine garden there that was almost empty (very few tourists) when I was there in November 2017.
This place is not easy to find. Take Metro Line 8 to Shendu Highway. Then walk to nearby bus stop, and take Bus #10 for about fifteen minutes and five or six stops to the ancient town. Not 100% sure but I think there are also other bus lines that can get you there.
This is a rare water village within Shanghai proper. Zhujiajiao is the famous one, and worth seeing too. Qibao is small but closer to downtown by Metro. So much to see in and around SH!

Really cool spot not too far from the Bund. Cheap shopping and cheap street eats too. Great place to get souveniers.

Nice place to hangout away out from the city for a while. Not actually a big place but could make you feel the thicker traditional atmosphere than Yu Yuan Old Street Market.
Very convenient transport, just take Metro Line 8 to Shen Du Highway, exit number 1 or two, walk towards the traffic light, cross the street, walk left (you will see a bus terminal station, ignore it) till you find a bus stop (150m).
Stop at the ancient town station zhaojialou zhan (召稼楼站) the entrance are just 30m on the right. No ticket needed, just enter, and start snacking...
Xiao Mai, meat covered with thin flour sheet, and have a very delicious soup in it, is my highlights of the day.
Cant miss the boiled white balls with some peanuts or black sesame also, and the chives (green onion leaves) cake.
Easily spend 2 hours here without having lunch or dinner. In the night, some barbeque stall will only be open.
Have fun!

We were able to feel the ancient water town, calm residents still now. Surely recommend night time for calm mood. Not too pricey souvenir ex) Artisanal handmade bamboo cups.

Temple fair is a combination of market place and meeting point in old days. You can find hundreds years old buildings, former family gardens of rich people, many speciality restaurants and stalls. The canals through the town and the bridges increase surely the charm of the town.

This area is great for a walk around and some shopping. Also plenty of food options and balcony bars for drinks overlooking the water. We thought that buying tickets at the gate was a requirement though and we ended up just walking around and not seeing any of the ticketed attractions (a garden and temple etc.)

Must go , beautiful historic water city just outside Shanghai.
Very quaint little market shops selling all kinds of local produce, and some luxury goods.
Great place to have lunch , especially the Dumplings and soup
Also go look around the Museum it tells the story of Chinese Film and Actors , this was a training school on how to learn your art, very interesting .

Hi Dan
I went there in July 2014 and had the best rice dumplings ever! And the same wontan soup as your photo. Probably the same place! I was in a private visit with some locals, so I don't remember if there were taxis and if they could drive all the way to Shanghai. My parents are elderly and it might be a bit difficult the subway for them. There is a lot to walk.
Thanks.
Helen
