Xu Guangqi (1562-1633), born in Shanghai, was a high-ranking scholar-official in the late Ming Dynasty, holding the highest degree of Jinshi from the imperial examination and official positions of Grand Guardian of the Heir Apparent, Minister of Rites, and Grand Secretary. He was buried in 1641 at what is now Guangqi Park in Xujiahui. For his great contributions to introducing to China the Western modern science and technology, particularly in Mathematics, Astronomy, Agriculture, and Military Science, he is hailed as “a patriotic scientist in the late Ming Dynasty” and “the first pioneer of the cultural exchange between China and the Western world.” Located at 17 Nandan Road, the Xu Guangqi Memorial Hall is remodeled from the Nanchunhua Hall, a typical Ming Dynasty residential house, which was relocated here for preservation purposes. The Memorial Hall covers a total area of over 400m2, including the display area at some 220 m2 that comprises four sections.

Interesting exposé about a man who protected the right of Christians to practice their religion, and for a time was imprisoned for it, by an official whose job he ultimately obtained. There was little about his actual religion, although we suspect he was Catholic. He...More

Xu is a famous scientist from the 1600s and in this quiet park there is his tomb and also a little museum. No ticket is required and there are many residents and few tourists.

A quiet, beautifully restored park and tomb of a Chinese scientist from the 1600s. (Oddly enough it is across the street from a modern-day observatory.) This is an oasis inside the hustle and bustle of the city around it. There is a nice walking path...More

Gubei / Hongqiao / Minhang
West of Shanghai’s better-known business, cultural and
entertainment centers, lies an expansive area of
residential neighborhoods peppered with lifestyle
pockets that have their own unique attractions. The
schools have formed pockets of international
communities throughout Gubei, Hongqiao and Minhang.
Quite a few entertainment and shopping centers have
built up over the years to cater to these communities.
