In Shanghai on Business and with only a finite amount of time to "see the sights" I opted for the Shanghai History Museum, mainly because I thought it would be nice to delve into some of the history of this city, but mostly because it was free and you didn't need to reserve tickets or what not through a nonsense WeChat applet.

I arrived just before opening to see a handful of people milling about taking photos of then building with its distinctive clock tower. The barriers were up and a dude was turning people away at the partially open gate - it wasn't open yet.

Come 9am and the barriers came down and we were allowed through. Security check, no passport required, no free tickets required, and I was in.

I won't bore you with minute detail but if you have a thing for history, and Shanghai history at that, then this is the place to be. There are ancient artefacts, relics from the early history of the city, to modern(ish) Shanghai (think the beginning of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom").

I was very quickly the only person there, which was awesome for photos, but sad for the museum. I had gotten there early as I was warned that museums etc, get swamped during the weekends. I either caught them on a quiet day or this isn't one of those packed venues...

Still, if you're into the history of this city then go see, it's free, but this museum is not essential.

I really enjoyed my visit to the Shanghai History Museum. I didn't have to register or show my passport to get in - just walked in through the security check. And inside it was nice and quiet, so it was possible to read and absorb the exhibits without jostling for space with a million tour groups. The museum takes the visitor thoroughly through the history of Shanghai, from early settlement to the rise of Communism, with plenty of photos, artefacts and so on. The English signage is good too. Highly recommended.

A great free museum in the centre of the city, if you're a history afficionado you can expect to learn a great deal about the long history of the city.

However, the needless lionisation and politicisation of the top half of the fourth floor in a dedicated sop to the Party is a needless and boring distraction from the real history of one of Asia's greatest cities.

The history of Shanghai is displayed in a large collection of articles. The exhibits are arranged in a systematic chronological order. Worth to pay a visit to learn more about the city.

A large, free and very comprehensive exhibition (mostly with English translations) of the origins and development of the region and city. Supported by many artifacts this is, however, overly academic and probably not one for the casual traveler or children. A lot of focus is given to the founding of the communist party, which was the most interesting section, although I also liked the China at War section. Overall it seemed a little staid and stuffy but reasonably interesting

Honestly I don’t know how this museum only has 19 reviews. It’s a great museum and the best part is that it’s free. Also gave me something to do during the typhoon. They’re constantly expanding with more artifacts and whatnot. Pretty cool stuff

We heard about this free museum about the history of Shanghai and made sure to check it out. It's really pretty big, on several floors, and has the history of shanghai back thousands of years to current.

There are lots of scenes representing people doing different activities throughout the history of Shanghai. There are paintings, furniture, vehicles, models, photos, pottery, dioramas and more. There was a ton of stuff to learn and there is plenty of information to gather by reading about all the displays. It is well designed and quite interesting.

The museum is near the People's Square metro station and easy to access, but since it was redone recently it has gotten more crowded. I'd definitely recommend visiting, there is a lot of learn about this port town over the years for its growth and contribution to history.

I was supposed to go to "regular" museum, but lines were incredibly long, so my guide CELINE decided to try this museum. An unforgettable and not regrettable choice. Full of great information on the growth and development of this cosmopolitan city.
