Another excellent Alabama State Park. Oak Mountain is beautiful and filled with things to do. The campground is accessible to and used by all kinds of campers; from primitive tent camping to luxury big rigs and everything inbetween. The camp sites are level and well cared for. The staff are friendly and helpful and they respond quickly to your needs. The only area with 50 amp service is the equistrian camping section so, if you use 50 amp service make sure you bring a pig tail to cut down to the 30 amps. Make sure you come in the south entrance as the north entrance is a bit more difficult when bringing in a big rig. Once you exit off 65 the turn on State Camp Ground Rd. is almost immediate -- easy to miss.
Great biking and hiking. A beautiful lake for fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding and peddle boating. Rental prices are not bad at all. The Golf course is beautiful and you can go to the driving range for $1.00 for a bucket of balls. We highly recommend Oak Mountain State Park. We were there is May 2021 and we drive a Class A, 38 ft. with a flat toad.

Campgrounds well maintained. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Arrived after dark, and camping spot reserved online was not best available spot. Check-in clerk offered a better spot and so glad that she did. The campground map online is not to scale. Many camping sites are a lot closer to other sites than they appear. Go for the sites farthest from lake if you are looking for a little privacy and to feel more like you are in the woods. Playground, beach and fishing dock is within close walking distance of every camp site. One hiking trail starts in the campgrounds with the more popular ones outside of campgrounds but still within park. Archery Range, Wildlife Preserve, bike & hiking trails, kayaking, just so so much to do. Campground store opens at 9 a.m. and not open on Sundays. Sells ice, firewood and more.

We had such a good time, weather was perfect for a hike. Everything was well marked. Had AT&T and no phone service at the start of the hike. A problem when your maps are on the phone. beautiful scenery will come back in the fall and spring. Spent the day, and didn't see 1/4 of the park. Enjoyed picnic for lunch. Only problem, after lunch time the crowd arrived, I love dogs, but I don't like dogs who are in public places and not on leashes. I saw were there is a stiff fine if caught. The Rangers need to come and hang out on the Blue Trail and make a fortune. Even in the parking area a man turned his dog loose to go and take care of the business. Dog didn't and ran across the road and up the mountain. That was funny!!!

For a park with a golf course, equestrian facilities, deluxe archery range, newly paved roads with bike lanes and much more, the camping facilities are unimproved and need a major update. All kind of money was spent on the above mentioned amenities but very little on the camping area. As a previous reviewer noted, the bathrooms are in sad shape. A great park but the campground needs a makeover. Park staff and volunteers were extremely helpful and friendly.

This is one of my favorite campgrounds. The drive in is long (and easy), making it feel like you're a million miles away from the city. Folks are all friendly. Campsites vary in size, but ours was plenty long for a 33' rig and truck. Nice width, too. Water and electric worked well. OTA tv channels from Birmingham. Many activities in the park for kids and adults. So quiet at night, and such a relief from so many other "parking lot" campgrounds. Looking forward to returning.

A friend and I had lunch in the park restaurant. The food was excellent, made to order, and very reasonable. The restaurant is located in the golf club overlooking the golf course. A very pleasant place to enjoy a nice meal sitting on the back porch watching golfers enjoying their day.

We stayed in cabin 8 for 4 nights. Overall it is about what you would expect in a state park. The cabin was clean and seems to be updated. The cabin is one of the 2 closest to the lake. The view is very nice. The back door of the cabin opens to a porch with a swing and 2 chairs. The only issue is that it does not have some of the cooking items that are described in the information provided about the cabin. It has only one skillet and no cookie sheet. There was nothing use for a casserole or similar item that needs to be baked in the oven. We bought a casserole dish and left it in the cabin for others to use. Also there were 1 or 2 huge roaches per day to deal with. I know these roaches are common but finding them every single day is a bit much. All of the park staff were very attentive and polite.

Stayed there three days and two nights. Wished it was longer! Awesome park. Camp sight was nice and big enough for 30 foot camper. Only had water and electric hook up available. Plenty to see and do in Alabama’s biggest state park. Rapper center nature trail was very nice. Only got 9 holes of golf in before dark but course was well kept through not particularly challenging. Mountain bike trail were what we came for and we weren’t disappointed. Well kept and marked. Different levels available for all riders. We will come back and stay longer next time!

I’m embarrassed as an Alabamian to have people visit this campground. Grass up to my knees and our fire pit which also serves as your grill looks to have been run over several times. No attempt was made to replace it after it was reported. Facilities are run But boy the golf course looks great.

There really are so many choices. I stuck with kayaking, sitting by the lake, and hiking the trails. Maps are clear and there are several intersections, so you can find the wildlife from the interpretive center and branch off to different areas or peaks. Just bring the bug spray.

If you are staying at the campground, do you still have to pay a gate fee every time to enter the beach and other park attraction areas?
Written 11 June 2020
No, your campground reservation covers your daily $5 fee.

We are considering a November visit to Oak Mountain State Park to MTB and kayak and camp with our GO pop up trailer. . Does anyone know if there are any campsites that have lake water access? If so could you give us site numbers or directions of how to find these types of camp sites via a map? We would like to be able to put in our kayaks in from near our campsite. We have a kayak cart so we can wheel them for a short distance . Any other tips would be appreciated!

I would recommend you call their office. The online map is not very useful but their staff helped us immensely in choosing an appropriate site. We LOVE it there!

Okay, this question isn’t crazy if you Google states that have alligators in their waters Alabama has plenty. Are there alligators in the lakes at the park? Florida girl here where 90+% of all fresh water has alligators. Bringing my dog.

The Park Office would be best equipped to answer your question. Open 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Central, seven days a week (closed on some holidays): 205-620-2520 or 205-620-2524.

Admission prices according to the Park website ...
$5 per Adult (age 12+)
$2 per Child (age 4 to 11)
$2 per Senior (age 62+)

Paid entry affords your group access to the public beach, as well as to other Park attractions. I highly recommend the horseback trail rides if such an activity suits your party of visitors.

Hi,
I'm looking to do tent camping at Oak Mountain w/ another family. Can two tents be put up at one campsite? It would be a total of 7 people.
Thanks!
Written 3 November 2018
Yes, I assume so. Most of the campsites are rather large and I don't see any reason why two tents wouldn't be okay. But I'd call just to get the official answer.

Does the beach area get really crowded on the weekends? When is the best time to go ?
Written 27 July 2018
We drove thru to just look at the park on July 4th. We were in the area so I decided to go and check it out. We arrived around noon and it appeared to be packing with people. I would say it all depends on when you decide to go.
