About
The History Museum of Mobile is where Mobile’s story begins. Over 117,000 objects weave together the rich, diverse, and often turbulent histories of Mobile and the surrounding area, from the prehistoric past to the present. Located in the heart of downtown, the History Museum of Mobile operates three campuses: The primary exhibitions are located in the Old City Hall-Southern Market building at 111 South Royal Street; Colonial Fort Condé is at 150 South Royal Street; and the Phoenix Fire Museum is at 203 South Claiborne Street.

Well worth a visit while you're in Mobile. I was lucky enough to visit when they had a special exhibit titled "The Global Language of Headwear", a fascinating exhibit with hats from around the world. In addition to the history museum, I also enjoyed the Miniature Homes on display - these must be seen to be appreciated.

The museum was way beyond our expectations. The exhibits brought everything to life. From Spanish discovery, to French, then English, then Spanish and then American occupation. With special exhibits for slavery and American Indians, including the highly significant excavations of a surprisingly advanced Indian culture up the river. Could easily have spent 2 days there.

This museum is how all museums should be. The displays were interesting and kept us engaged. They came together to tell a cohesive story of the city. Would recommend to anyone learning more about Mobile.

The History Museum is located downtown Mobile next to the Mardi Gras Park. When we visited a special exhibition “22 Objects” was on show, giving interesting facts about the development of the city through more than three hundred years.
In particular we enjoyed some beautiful Mardi Gras objects.
It is a rather large museum with much to see, so expect to spend some time here. The nearby Colonial Fort Condé is part of the Museum and definitely also worth a visit.

Very informative and well done presentation of Mobile’s history. Appreciated that they did not white wash African American history

Two adults spent about five hours in the History Museum of Mobile on a Friday afternoon in early June. It was not crowded, which made for a pleasant experience. YMMV. The Viking special exhibit was absolutely fascinating—really a world class exhibit. Our only complaint was that we wished it included more items, they were well displayed and explained. Unfortunately, the exhibit will only be there through mid-June. The rest of the museum was well laid out and very interesting, covering the history of the greater Mobile area from prehistory through the Civil War to modern day. All covered very well. More exhibits than we really had time to see, but we tend to read almost all accompanying material. Also included entrance to Reproduction Fort Conde, across the street, which we did not have time for. Our loss. Again, YMMV.

We did not have time to visit all the museums exhibits which, if they’re as good as the section we saw is a shame. The 22 objects exhibit is detailed and thoughtful and gave information across the centuries. The objects were quirky and well chosen and captured my imagination.

We visited on a Friday morning. The museum opens at 9AM, early for a museum in Mobile. We saw the Vikings exhibit and the "22 objects" exhibit. The former was ok but limited in its scope. The latter was actually fairly interesting, with a good summary of some of the highlights of Mobile history. We also spent a short time on some the other exhibits. There is a lot to see, and it was pretty interesting.

Over the years I've learned to appreciate these little city level history museums - when done decently they can convey a sense of what the place was like through time, integrate it into the state and larger context of US history as a whole. The HMM does this pretty well. And, it has better hours than some historic houses, so you can fit it in when others are closed. The civil rights era was addressed in context and, along with several other exhibits had interesting AV display should you want to listen to contemporary news accounts and first person recollection. Taken for what it is, it's really quite good - you can breeze through if that's your preference or spend a little more time and read. Very friendly staff too.
