A lot of improvements have been made. There's new section of Dinosaur parks with an area about 5 acres. It's so big. I enjoyed it so much as well as my 6 year old brother. He didn't get bored at all. I got the chance to feed giraffe and cow for free. Do come early in the morning, if you want to experience it. Overall, very clean and enjoyable. I'm soooo happy and it's an unforgettable moments for me.

We went to the Malacca zoo, and almost came out crying. The animals don't get (enough) food, they don't have water to drink.. we saw elephants hurting themselves against the wall, tigers going crazy because they had no space, a rhino and crocodile with no water, the "management" (youngsters riding a scooter) not caring at all about the animals, etc. When I said I wanted to speak to someone about this situation, "then there was no one there to tell my concerns".
PLEASE, if you care a little bit about these animals, do/tell something about it or don't go there. It's really sad to see.

This is not a zoo. A temporary animal housing facility maybe, but zoo? no way. And as far as endangered species conservation is concerned, Zoo Melaka is a mockery.

I went to this zoo last week with my 2 year old son and wife, hoping to see the same zoo that got my respect and praise for the effort in species diversity. Back in 2008, the mini safari was full of giraffes and zebra and ostriches. The aviary was full of different bird species and the elephants were lively. Sadly now in 2013 the zoo has literally gone to the dogs.

What did I see?

1.) Miniature ponies near the rhino enclosure ; missing.
2.) Rhinos still there but very thin, and accompanied by 2 wildebeest who were equally emaciated
3.) 2 capybara in an enclosure resembling more of tropical wasteland than a lush rainforest.
4.) 2 tapir in muddy overgrown enclosures that are wearing down at the masonry.
5.) Sumateran rhinos; Missing
6.) Walk in enclosure that once housed ring tailed lemurs and flying foxes, closed and broken down. The red panda was also missing, probably dead.
7.) Plenty of deer though, and African cattle species.
8.) 1 solitary seladang, in and enclosure that once housed 2 of them comfortably.
9.) 1 half drunk (or was it half dead) chimp .
10.) 1 dejected looking orang utan
11.) A coupled of bald mandrills.
12.) Some gibbons swinging around , couldn't see them much though coz the monkey island was not maintained and overgrown.
13.) 2 dirty ostriches that could do with a good cleanup. It's funny, coz I am very sure they are suppose to have feathers at their hind ends. The Melaka zoo versions don't. And their plumage distinctly looks non African. Maybe a new Melaka species?
14 .) Some emus from Australia also missing feathers.
15.) Plenty of storks you can actually see in rice paddies here in Melaka. No need to pay RM10 to see them
16.) A tortoise garden with more garden then tortoises.
17.) Malayan wild dog, now I didn't know we had them. But the one in this zoo looked more like a stray mongrel.
18.) The aviary housed 1 sickly looking maribou stork, and some white pigeon like birds, no more crowned cranes, spoonbill storks or even the mandarin ducks that used to paddle in the pond.
19.) Mousedeer enclosure with 1 solitary inmate, in 2008 there were at least 10. The other inmates were some Indian barking deer. The lyre birds were gone.
20.) Of course they tried something new, a walk in peacock enclosure with 2 peacocks just sitting there watching you as you watch them.
21.) Otters, that thankfully showed the most life among all the other animals there.
22.) Tigers that were mostly sleeping,
23.) 1 poor african lion suffering from heatstroke.
24.) 2 black leopards in an enclosure that's dark and gloomy
25.) Another leapord in and enclosure with no foliage.
26.) 1 solitary clouded leopard.
27.) The mini safari where you once could walk side by side with a giraffe also closed and broken down.
28 .) Giraffe enclosure with 2 of them, in 2008 there were at least 6 with 2 in the enclosure and 4 in the mini safari

This are most of the animals in the zoo. The facility boasts over a 100 animals. Obviously they flunked their basic math, because what I saw doesn't even come close. Maybe they are counting the wild macaques that are running rampant in the zoo grounds too. There is truth in the news reports that at least 230 animals had gone missing from zoo melaka.

Overall, this has to be one of the worst examples of animal welfare in Malaysia. No enrichment is going on to improve the quality of the animals lives in captivity. And what's more there's nothing in this zoo that educates its visitors about the animals. Forget about learning anything here. The enclosures are close to breaking down. Open concept? Wide open to roam free is more like it. And something has to be said about the overall layout if the zoo. The walking paths are a natural hazard for one to twist an ankle or maybe even trip and fall flat. You got trees growing in the middle of the walkway!

If you have young kids, don't bring them here, coz you don't want to have your strollers getting stuck of and on in potholes and sinkholes. I brought mine and I had to bite my tongue to keep from cursing a blue streak in front of my toddler.

The amenities for visitors are barely basic , you have ice cream and cold drinks, but forget about having a main meal here. There is nothing savoury here. Just plenty of local stalls selling local snacks. For the brave , you might try at your own risks.

The only saving grace would be the animal show. Of course to get up close with the animals you got to fork out RM 10 each time. Not worth it for me after seeing the overall deterioration of
the zoo.

I don't know why people even bother to drive all the way here. Maybe they , like me , were hoping to see the same zoo that we knew back in our early years. Unfortunately the reality is we were all conned out of RM 10. I hate to say it, being a Melaka native myself, but Zoo Melaka should not be labeled as a tourist attraction the way it is now. Anyone who is keen naturalist or even an animal lover will just find this place a affront and a disgrace.

Someone once claimed that in 2 years time , somewhere in 2015, zoo melaka would be on par with Singapore Zoo. Well dream on mate. I think even in 10 years, it wouldn't come close. Not unless the zoo management gets its act together and starts benchmarking better zoos.

Somehow after seeing how the zoo is currently run, even that would be asking too much. Zoo Melaka would be better off shut down and the animals donated to better zoos like Taiping Zoo.

There are tramp transportation to move around the zoo with guidance. But please alert, the price of food/drinks inside here is bit expensive and not many choice. Better to eat first before enter here.

The advantages is you can feed these animal(girafe, elephant, etc) by paying certain of amount to the operator at the cages, they will provide you with some animal foods.

Reminder, bring insects repellant if you want to walk from animal cage to animal cage. Lots of mosquito.

There will be free animal show (bird) at certain time inside the zoo, refer the time schedule at counter.

Like Zoo Negara (National Zoo), I felt slightly sad and disappointed after visiting this place. Being an animal lover, I used to enjoy this zoo back in 2007. Today, the obvious lack of maintenance and care of the zoo are reflected in the stressed animals and their lack of well being.

You can see the negligence in cleanliness and maintenance of the enclosures and the missing presence of so many countless animals. I was surprised that this place deteriorated too quickly.

The zoo urgently needs an upgrading and restoration before more of the animals kept here are gone. Hopefully, the zoo management will do something about this.

We visited this zoo with two young children in the afternoon. We liked that there were walk-in enclosures for us to visit the deers and some of the birds. I would say it was one of the better zoos I've visited out of Singapore. Parts of the path were undulating, but still manageable if you bring a pram along (although getting into some of the smaller exhibits would be challenging).

As we visited on a weekday afternoon, the zoo was practically empty. We spotted only about 4-5 small groups of families in the zoo, and we were the only visitors present at the elephant feeding (2.30pm) and bird show (3.30pm), which was almost like having a private show all to ourselves! Good thing also, cos that meant we were the only "volunteers" they needed for the bird show, which included a photo opportunity with the birds.

Some pro tips for when you visit:
-Slap on mosquito patches/insect repellent, and be generous about it! You know how kids will dawdle and observe some animals for a while - these are prime opportunities for mozzies to bite! If you don't mind the heat, wear long pants or cover up as much as possible. We managed to kill some 10+ mozzies between my wife and me.

-If you are driving, try to get some parking coupons from Malacca town before you arrive. There is a counter at the entrance of the car park selling coupons, but if you are unlucky like we were, there was noone manning the counter when we arrived. Parking coupons are 60 sen (cents) for an hour. We waited for 30 minutes, and decided to go in, only to find a parking summon for RM30 when we returned. (We went to the Traffic Police counter to "complain" and we ended up paying just RM10 for the summon, but would still have been easier to have just bought coupons before we went)

-Try to time your visit to coincide with the animal shows! If you go during the low season, it's definitely worth making a detour to catch the shows (not the most exciting, but the kids enjoy it!) The shows are in malay though.

-There are snack/drinks/ice cream shops located throughout the zoo. There weren't restaurants open selling full meals while we were there (but it was really low season), so I do recommend eating before/after you visit the zoo.

Not so big, not little. We spend about 3 hours here, including watching the bird show at 11 am. Can buy the tickets with cheaper price at 11street website (cheaper by RM2 for malaysian/ Mykad holder). There's cafe inside to huy food, but at the ticket counter at the entrace itself they will ask whether you want to include food in your ticket or not. Much easier.
There's zebra feeding activity (public can feed the zebra also, and the staff will take photos of you using your camera), tiger feeeding also.
The zoo is shady with many trees. There's no map given at the entrance, but there's plenty of them inside. But basically the route is simple. Just a big circle.

We brought our 2 year old son here because of his keen interest in animals. But I was saddened with the condition of the animals here, especially the rabbits. They were in very poor condition. There were grass weeds everywhere and the place was just not 'alive'. It is so obvious that the place is poorly maintained.
There were not many visitors in the zoo when we were there, my guess is less than 20?For a minute there we felt like we have the zoo to ourselves. Luckily we hired a private guide with a buggy to take us around. We really liked the guide cause he was very passionate when explaining about the animals.
I hope the management could improve this place in the near future. It would have been a great place for families.

Expensive entrance fee (22.5 ringgit for foreigners), and a zoo falling a part. Even it is written everywhere do not feed the animals, and they check at the entrance if you carry any food, we saw a zoo keeper feeding macaques with chips and soda...
Most of the animals didn't have water to drink. Crocs no water to swim. Etc, etc...
This zoo is a ruin. I've been only another one worst than this one, Jakarta zoo.
I suggest you the zoo of Johor Bahru, much cheaper, only 2 ringgit (no distinction foreigners or locals), and animals seems much happier.
