Being able to see and feel the oldest synagogue in a country that celebrates Christianity had great meaning for me. The exhibits features videos that are well done and do an excellent job telling their story. My non Jewish friends were equally moved.

Interesting place. Was good to learn about the history of the Jews in the north east. There isn't a lot to actually see though but worth a visit.

For a Dutch person with a deep and long interest in (Jewish) History this was a beautiful place to visit. Mind you very little here is really old but the restoration on the original site of the place where the synagogue stood between 1636 - 1654 is done with much love and intelligence. I really recommend the short film shown... More

This museum shows the amazing history of the Jewish diaspora in the Brazilian Northeast. It's fascinating.

We visited on a Saturday and unfortunately we couldn't enter the synagoge... should've known! It is a characteristic building in the center of Recife Antigo and you cannot really tell from the outside it is a synagoge, except for the writings on the wall of course. The street-side architecture melts in with the rest of Recife Antigo...

We visited this synagogue while doing a tour with Masautur. It is the oldest synagogue of the Americas, located in the hearth of old town Recife. There is an entry fee of 10 Reals per person ( 5 Reals for 60 years old and over ). The museum has 4 floors and you can see the foundations of the first... More

Very nice museum, with a very well maintained archive on the life of the first Jewish settlers in Recife. It would be five stars if not for the fact that the guide was comically unqualified for her job (I believe she was still a student intern, so its not her fault she wasn't under supervision of was better trained).

The first synagogue in the Americas! Built by the Jewish population who lived in Brazil under the Dutch, 1630-1652.. Seems like the Jews were happy and productive in Recife until the Portuguese took over and brought the Spanish Inquisition with them, forcing the Jews to become "New Christians" or be killed. Some escaped to the hinterlands of Brazil and changed... More

I am Jewish and have seen more exquisite churches in Brazil than I can count. I was traveling with my partner whom is Catholic and we were both moved by the building, exhibit and energy. The history, politics and understanding the determination of a people to try to live freely is just as moving today.
